CNPS9500-AT, poor conductivity?

Just powered on my first Pentium D 920 with a CNPS9500-AT.

Running 3.6Ghz 1.3V at the moment, and I'm seeing temperature of 59'C full load!
But my CNPS9500-AT is not even warmer than my hand Using Arctic Ceramique, screws are tighten on.

Wondering if its normal?

I even added Arctic Ceramique to the heatpipes and the temperature went even higher
Ran out of arctic ceramique too...

One thing very odd is that at idle my core voltage is at 1.38V and once I load it the voltage drops to 1.3V. 12V output didn't drop afaics

Im not up on cpu temps but im sure i saw a review on the new p4 chips stating idle temps at 77'C but i suppose you have a very good cooler.. umm i dunno..

Hi, not wanting to hijack the thread but i have an IBM thinkcentre S51 which i picked up quite cheaply ive looked for the exact CPU spec (i think its a 3.2ghz but i dont know if its a 5xx series or 6xx series) I did find a few sites stating 540 or 541

Used si-soft sandra and it just says 3.2ghz FC LGA775 P4E BUT it also says under upgradabilty socket 478... errr... its 478 the older socket type??

Now after looking at a thread that someone posted about RAM timings etc I d/l CPU-Z and now this shows up as a P4 640.. im sure the hyper threading also makes windows xp see the CPU as a dual core (CPU 0 + 1 on task manager).

Would CPU-Z tell me sweet little lies or am is it right? (hope so.. 640 is better than 540 right?)

also when i decide to upgrade Mobo, case and psu (this board only has 1xPCI and 1xPCI-E 1x if i remember rightly) is it worth waiting for DDR2?

any other info appreciated..

I'm using the Asus Probe to get the temp. I got a thin layer of Arctic ceramique on both the CPU and the bottom of the heatsink fan. Speed of the fan doesn't really matter, the temperature is the same running 1200rpm or 2600rpm. I would say the triple 8 heatpipes are not doing the job well.

Idle:
2800Mhz 1.3375V (1.38 Actual) = 38'C
4004Mhz 1.3375V (1.37 Actual) = 41'C
Full Load:
4004Mhz 1.35V (1.29 Actual) = 60'C

Very odd, or is the core really put out that much heat. Temperature bump from 38 -> 49 in 1 second upon SP2004 start (for 1 core), and 49->56 in 1 second upon 2nd core start, then slowly increase to 60

The temperatures reported by software might be slightly misleading, however I think you've been spoiled by running an AMD A64 (according to your sig). Intel P4 CPUs tend to run very hot...

Remove the ceramique and only put a little blob on the CPU. DO NOT put it on the cooler itself. It sounds like you put too much thermal paste.

Put about a uncooked rice grain and a half on the cpu and put the cooler on.

Tried that and gave 2 days for it to sit in but it didn't even cover the whole IHS when I pull it off the first time, so I had to add more.

The temperature just jumps up too fast. Yes I'm spoiled by my A64s My A64 only heats up 1 deg per 20 sec at full load instead of 10 deg per sec.

afaik the IHS isn't what matters. This just covers the CPU die. For intstance the contact on my evo 33 for my X2 is a little circle, doesn't cover the whole IHS and it cools fine

Same as bright_ you only need a tiny bit in the centre, just a piece of rice size then plunk the cooler on without spreading it out and twist it half a turn clockwise, half a turn anticlockwise and then screw it down.

Second that, an Intel Prescott can get VERY hot.. U can bake a cake with the hot exhaust coming out of my 520.. and thats not even overclocked..

try touching the base if u can reach it.. not the IHS, just the side of the copper base.. I can reach it fairly easily.. It gets pretty warm (by no means hot though) during load on my X2 at 2400MHz
