    Dell Dimension 3000 Upgrade!!

A friend of mine owns a Dell Dimension 3000 carrying a 2.8ghz Pentium 4 processor (socket 478). He wants to upgrade his motherboard so he can have an AGP gfx card! Can this be done and is it wise? I was thinking sometihng along the lines of this one. Would that be compatable any help would be much appreciated!

The only problem is that dell uses proprietry boards - doesn't always mean that it conforms to the atx standard, both in terms of the case and the power supply. If you have a atx board handy you could test fit it, then order the new board - any atx board will do, regardless of whether it is designed to support AMD or Intel processors.

thanks for the quick replies, having a look at the board already fitted, it does look like ATX standard, its a good idea to put a ATX mobo in to try it? I doubt Dell would use a really odd shaped motherboard! hmmm....

They use propriety stuff all the time. I guess its so you have to stick to their upgrades etc. PITA but they do it anyway.

Yes I think you'r right, the PSU looks smaller and the mobo does as well, I think I need to measure it!!

It's more a case of checking that the PSU connection to the mobo is the same - it may use a different connector, or (possibly) even the same connector but wired up differently. Basically, they don't want you to replace anything with a non-Dell part....

the power supply is different and the slots on the backplane won't line up with a standard motherboard - buy a new case and power supply as part of your upgrade..

ahh well another case and PSU is a little out of his budget! Hmmm, I'm suprised you can't just fit a mini ATX board in! The cable to the mobo is a standard connection, maybe I should just try it and see what happens....

err ok so i persuaded him to buy a new case, i was thinking something cheap with a 400w PSU. Then if I bought an ATX mobo would that work? would an OK gfx card be able to run on that rig?....

yer i cant see any problems apart from if ur buying a new case could u not get a full atx mobo which are cheaper and often have more features?
the gfx card will run fine as long as its all there and working im just thinking u may aswell get a full atx board if u ca ncoz hey are better value.
