    Ultimate PC - ballpark #'s

    P4 3.2 EE $1000 (assume 4Ghz+ OC)
    Vapochill case $670
    Abit IC7 Max 3 $210
    9800XT (maybe 5950) $460
    1Gb XMS4000 Pro $360
    2 x 36 Raptors SATA $220
    WD 8Mb 120GB $100
    Lite On DVD+RW $110
    Lite on 52x24x52 $45
    Audigy 2 PCI $85
    Windows XP Home $95

    TOTAL approx. $3400

    or $2700 with a 3.0C instead

Most people already have KB, Mouse & speakers.

FX systems are still a little rough around the edges.... (for me)

Really, not too bad considering what some high end systems are selling for at Alienware, Falconwest, OCSystems, etc... for a 4Ghz phase cooled system.

Now, I just need to get some rich bastard to let me build them their ultimate gaming machine. That would be fun.

Ditch the Vapo and get a prommie mach 2, same performance but without the dog ugly case and mounting mechanism, ram i would say get OCZ PC4200, Its Cl2.5 which is better than the CL3 of the Corsair and rated for faster speeds, Apart from that not to bad, perhaps get the new raptors when there out?

I thought those pretty little activity lights on the Corsair would look cool with a windowed case. Pro is only needed if you're network a lot of PC's, other than that they are basically the same.

well for a start, only 2 raptors? please, get 4 and raid 1 + 0 them, i want some data integrity (and the extra performance you get from raid 1).

XP home? you must be joking? xp pro, win 2k advanced server and vector linux / dropgnome any day.

LITEON drives you kidding? a pioneer 106 or a sony dru500... at LEAST.

oh and a single 120gb backup drive? why not 2 250gb drives in raid1? if this is really an ultimate pc i want data integrity and a decent amount of performace. bigger platters = better performance, raid1 = data integrity.

you really could have done a lot better....

oh and a 64 bit processor please. we don't all use windows.

ok, I didnt say the PC that pwns all others in every aspect. I said an Ultimate PC targeted at some rich bastard who would pay me to build it. Talking about straight gaming performance. Not having the absolute best of every component (if so I would have gotten a Kenwood Tat2 CDRW, sony 12x, SCSI drives, etc.) And not every uber geek uses Linux you know.

Need something simple (easy to use and very stable) for someone simple who needs me to build them a system.

i would agree to get some bigger backup storage and maybe raid them.

Win xp PRO - not home.

plextor 8x dvd writer is another option.

also, for sound maybe go for an audigy 2 platinum or a terratec.
