CD writer probs
Hey,
couple of days ago i start notice intalling programs going really really slow. Then yesterday i try to write a cd and give up due to that being realy slow also. Today I used a different proggy to write CDs but this one gave me a drop down menu to change write speed. I was limited to 1X. This should be able to do 16x. A little further investigation reveals the read speed is also at 1X. Could anyone shed some light on why this is?

It normally shouldn't affect it this badly, but make sure that in device manager under Primary and Secondary IDE controller settings that they are set to "DMA if Available" (if running XP or 2k).

Both are set to DMA is avail yeah, thanks anyway :D. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried removing the drive entirely from device manager then restarting, also, remove it from DM, re-connect the cable just to make sure, then boot up, just to make sure that firstly the driver wasn't currupted, and secondly makes sure the cable isn't disconnected slightly.

Ive checked the cables are in, but not tried removing and rebooting, will give it a shot when i get in from college.

Probably a stupid question, but could it be anything to do with the media you are using?
I remember that some of the older CD-RWs would only read/write at just over 1x on some CDburners.

Not a stupid Question at all, but yes im reasonably sure as i have tried 2 diff makes of 48X CDs, with the same effect.
