    New lappy spec required

    My stepfather wants a laptop to use with broadband and some light work on accounts - he also wants to watch tv on it.

    Desired base spec:

    17 inch (good quality) widescreen monitor;
    Digital Receiving TV card; (with remote if possible)
    DVD RW Drive;
    Wireless.

    Must be of good build quality, with good battery life.
    He will not play games on this nor do any design work - any suggestions?

    Pricing: Unsure as he has to be convinced to spend the cash depending on what he gets for it. I doubt he wants to pay more than £1,000

    Cheers in advance

    Cheapest option would be the Acer Aspire 9503EWSMi which can be had for under £650. I would personally buy the TV card separately as that would give you a lot more flexibility.

    The ASUS AD7 is a nice notebook and can be had for just under £1000 specs are:

    AMD Mobile Turion™64-MT30
    Genuine Windows® XP Home
    1024MB DDRII 533 Memory
    100GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
    128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X700
    17.1"WXGA+X-Glass Widescreen
    High Resolution (1440X900)
    Dual Layer (+/-) DVD-RW/CD-RW
    Mini PCI Wireless LAN 802.11b/g
    Media Card Reader 4 in 1
    Built in Video camera (1.3M Pixels)
    Azalia 5.1 audio, 4 x speaker (Built in)
    Weight ~3.9Kg ,Battery Life ~ 3 hrs
    2 Years Worldwide Warranty

    He went to Comet and bought a Toshiba Sat.

    What can I say - an impulse buy. Sure he could have had a good spec from Acer and a better looking build for the same cash.

    Thanks for your advice though.

    Can't go wrong with a Toshiba. They make great laptops. Although as you said, he could've got a better spec for the money or even that Toshiba model cheaper on the net.
