Hi Peeps

i posted a price check a little while back about selling my system and someone pointed out that its actually not to bad a system, which got me thinking that yeah it aint bad really specs are

P4 3.2 GHz 800fsb
1GB Twinmos DDR 400
ATI X800 Pro
Sound BlasterAudigy
120GB SATA Drive 7200RPM
16X DVDR

all sat in a Soltek Qbic SFF

now my questions.

1, would upgrading to 2GB of ram and a nvidia 7800GS make much difference?

2, would a 7800GS phyically fit?

3, would the extra power requirments cause issue's with the 300w PSU

its a soltek qbic 3402 little sff thing,

i was alos thinking the 300w psu would not be good enough but are sff psu's magic as looking at the new shuttle 26p it can take 2 gfx in sli on only a 350w psu.

Think your best bet is more memory - best to have 2x1gb sticks though.

The x800 is a great card and although you will see some improvement with the nvidia card it wont really be worth the cost of changing.

Save any money for a dual core system in future or until direct x10 cards become available.

I have a Qbic but it's the 754 amd board and yes the psu is just fine as it used to be a 250 watt and they upgraded to 300 watt.

I have the 300 watt and it runs my rig nearly 24/7 with no probs and it's loaded with 2 sata drives & 2 optical drives plus another drive hanging on a cable out side the case & a usb external drive 1 gig mem and it has run solidly for the last 2 years, so not a problem

If it had been a 939 jobby I would have been very interested

dont give missleadiong imfo please under no circumtances will you psu be up to the task buy a new one, im not suprised yours is fine your gfx card is shokcing and demnds no power thats not the case with the sugested cards here, buy a 500 w psu then you will be fine for ever

His graphics card may be shocking, but none the less it does require quite a lot of power!

Nice PSU calculator site there Nobuo. Looks like the 7800GS would require just an extra "wafer thin" 11W.

I can highly recomend the 7800GS. I got an XFX XT edition and it rocks, even if it is AGP. You will need a new power supply definetly. The GFX card has SM3 and all up to date stuff on it. So if you want to keep this system and not upgrade to PCIe it might be worth it for the next couple of years with new games.

Please rainbow I am not giving misleading info and if I thought it was misleading in any way I would not advise, further more you cannot get a 500 watt psu for any sff machine due to space limitations and I also know that the 300 watt psu in the Qbic will drive a much larger gfx card and this has been proved.

I know these are old threads but it does prove a point.

u both have good points guys, yes ultimate it may run it, and yes rainbow it may be a better idea to upgrade the PSU nd live life less ont he edge, and giving u little worry in the future when u need more.

Thanks very much for all the advise here guys it has been useful. i have decided its time to move on.

im gonna buy a new machine with pci express and all that jazz, and sell this one while i can still get a few hundred for it.

Yeah, it made me realise I'm really living close to the edge with my 280W PSU! What actually happens when your wattage isn't enough?

i dont think anything to bad will happen, usually the pc will just keep restarting and such as it cant supply the power to the componants

I would certainly upgrade the psu as soon as possible as you are right on the borderline especially as you are going to upgrade the components but get a decent one not one of those generic types as they are the heart of any good machine.

There are some 650 watt psu's out there that I would not even run a cooling fan from never mind a full computer.

Right, thanks. Actually it did restart the other night while I was gaming, doesn't bode well.

Can you recommend one that would be good for my system? I haven't got a clue what I'm looking for. I have a micro-ATX machine, if you need to bear that in mind.
