146, generally better oc.
I have a 146 CABNE, I managed to get it to run at 2800 stable, but anything more and it kept crashing. I currently have it at 2500, I dont want/need it any higher.
no contest really, Opty FTW...
Me want Ultrabook
yes that is a nie chip, i have seen a few 3700 at 3 gig on kempezs forum, although generally the archtecture of opterons means they are more overclockable....
If possible check the stepping before buying - some 3700's are very good. I'm an Opteron fan but a good stepping of either can produce a good overclock.
Get a good cooler though, something like a Big TT, Thermalright, Ninja etc to get the best results.
he hsa got one that goes 3 gig on dfi with fast ram, he has artic cooler 64 all sound gd? its gunna cost him 150....
how do u find out what ur stepping is for 3700? and what are good steppings. I managed to get mine too 2.6 on stock cooler, running stable. didnt attempt to go further..

Re opteron 146 Athlon 3700
Is there much difference in performance out of the box?
Could i overclock these with a Asrock dual sate mobo? I am a Noob at OC/Building and have £350 burning a hole in pocket and i still need to buy a cpu/Ram & cooling to add to my brand new asrock dual for my 1st ever self build!
Or should i buy something other than the above? TY

if ur not a massive fan of overclocking i would get the 3700 as its quicker out the box, and if u want too do a minor clock, uve got a higher starting point with the 3700 at 2.2...

I would say 146, but it's not much more for a 148.
The 3700's of late are clocking very well and have been hitting 3ghz although so have the 146's. I'd personally go for a 3700 as with the higher multi your board needn't reach 300 odd fsb in order to produce a decent overclock. The opty 148's dont clock as well as the 146's iirc. Hope this helps.
Value ram- 3700
Performance ram- 146
Because of the multi-
240 FSB- Divider 333= DDR 200x2= DDR 400= PC 3200
240 X10= 2.4ghz =146 at 4000+
240x11= 2.6= 3700+ at FX55
