Drive Letter allocation in Windows

Hi guys,

Just reinstalling for the 3rd time in 24 hours (long story) but I need to get things A1 perfect or I cant live with them ;)

I have 3 SCSI drives, and everytime so far, Windows has allocated the drive I put XP on as C: The other two drives have data on, so normally are D and E.

XP always does this perfectly, and the SCSI Id's never change.

BUT...this one time I decdied to wipe the XP C drive AND one of the other drives, as I didn't need all the games etc on it.

When I put XP on to the same drive as always, it booted with XP on E drive!

And I cant find a way to move it back to C:...and yes I guess it's not thatr important really, except I like a new PC to be perrrfect (hence the 3 installs getting drivers sorted etc)

The weirdest thing though, is this: I went back into the XP install, to reformat and install from disk, and in THAT screen, the boot disk DID show as C drive. But when booting back into XP, it was E again!

I;m installing again now, with the other drives unplugged, for ease, but does anyone know how to move drive letters for future reference?

Is it even possible?

If you can get into windows.

Go to control panel - admin tools - computer management - disc management

and then all the drives should show up there and you can assign them any drive letter that you wish.

otherwise you may have to change the drive names in the bios, or a dos program, which i guess you may be able to get from your hard disk manufacturer. for instance i use maxtor powermax / maxblast but i am not sure whether you can actually change the drive letter with either of these.

Unfortunatley while what Muddyfox is saying is tue to an extent, I don't believe you can modify the drive letter of your system drive, probably because umtpeen installed apps will have placed entries in the registry which depend on certain paths being available.

I had this problem with my system, except with a SATA RAID array and regular IDE disks. The only way to get the C drive assigned to my SATA RAID array was to unplug the other drives during installation.

did a reinstall ;) and did that exactly....unplugged the other drives!

Was too worried it might get funny on me ;)
