    New Laptop upto 2k?

Hi, I'm looking for a laptop for a customer, they have upto 2k to spend (I will refrain from swearing)

It will be used only for a few light wieght windows applications, Outlook and surfing. But they have 2k, so just wondered what opinions people have? I thought the IBMs and Compaqs would be good, but seen a thread on here talking about Mesh latops, they look very nice and damn good spec.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and opinions.

What are their requirements for display size and portability? Do they need to display any stuff with high detail (drawings, photos, that sort of thing)?

Just to start, how about a Samsung X60?
    A thin'n'light Vaio?

Jesus, you don't need to spend 2k on a laptop to be only used for a few light wieght windows applications, Outlook and surfing!

I paid £450 for mine and it absolutely tears through anything I do with it, as long as its not gaming.

You can get a reasonable spec laptop for about £500ish, but they're not much to look at. Function over form in this case. (I own a Dell Inspiron 510m, and although it's served me well, and works excellently, it's not the prettiest thing in the world)

If they're willing to spend up to £2k, but only want it for lightweight windows apps, rather than pure system power, I'd either go for as light as possible, or something with a nice big decent screen if they're not bothered about it being small.

The Vaios look and feel lovely with a fantastic build quality that's better than most other PC notebook anufacturers, but once out of warranty, they're a real pain to get repaired if you need them to. However, if it's a big business paying for it, you don't need to worry about that

Definately go for a Centrino Duo with a fast dual core CPU.
I like as well Samsung myself but the X60 only has a T2300. It's a nice laptop in every way but a faster CPU would be worth paying extra for.
I wouldn't recommend spending 2k on a laptop. Remember that you'll probably need to think about extras (software, warranty, USB flash drives, backup, carry case etc etc. All this stuff mounts up.
I reckon that he'd be better off spending £1,000 now and another £1,000 in 3-4 years time than spending £2k and thinking that he'll keep it for 6-8 years. It comes to the same thing but I'd much rather replace more regularly. When Vista arrives his super fast £2k laptop won't seem quite so good!!!!

    Consider:

    Samsung
    Sony (not a fan myself!)
    Acer
Dell (much better than they used to be)
    Asus

If he wants thin'n'light, he'd be well advised to wait for the release of the Dell D420 - thinner and lighter than the 410, with better battery life. It'll be using the low voltage Core Duo, so clocks aren't going to be screamingly high, but it'll be more than adequate.

    Oh, and the X60 I linked to uses a T2500, not a T2300.

    Thanks for the replies.

The gent has £2k to spend on a laptop, he is not tech savvy, and no idea what the difference is from a intel to a amd. he just wants a upto 2k laptop

I have looked at the Dell D410, looks nice, and done a custom option one.

Operating System: Genuine Windows® XP Professional (Service Pack 2) WITH Media using NTFS - Dell Recommended Feature
    Base: D410 with Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 (2.0Ghz) UMA graphics, 12.1" XGA TFT display (+ GBP £160)
Dell System Media Kits: Resource CD required (+ GBP £5)
    CompleteCare Accidental & Theft Cover: 3 Year CompleteCare Multi-Cover : 3y Accident Cover + 3y Theft Cover (+ GBP £100)
    Business Support: Not Included
Support Service: 3 Year International Onsite Service with Next Business Day Response
    Memory: 1GB 533MHz DDR2 Memory (1 x 1GB) (+ GBP £90)
Hard Drive: 80GB 5400rpm Removable EIDE Hard Drive (+ GBP £60)
Keep Your Hard Drive: Not Included
Optical D/Bay or D410 MediaBase Options: D410 MediaBase with 8x DVD+/-RW Drive with decoder software (+ GBP £30)
Wireless Card Solution: Intel PROWireless 2915 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI card - for Intel Centrino Mobile Technology - DELL RECOMMENDS (+ GBP £20)
Mobile Communications: Internal Dell 350 Bluetooth™ Card - Factory install only (+ GBP £12)
AC Power Adapter: 65W standard D/Family AC Adapter
Monitor: I do not require a monitor
Carry Case: D410 Leather Slip case (+ GBP £45)
Accessories: Dell™ USB Optical 2 button scroll mouse - Midnight Grey (+ GBP £15)
    Systems Management: None
Asset and Security Tagging / Anti-Theft Software: Not Included

    £1,844.75 Delivered.

Is it worth going for the 7200rpm HD or will the 5200rpm be enough, I know about speeds, just not sure if the 7200 will be too hot for laptop use.

And is the extra .13GHz worth the extra £80?

    WAIT! WAIT! WAIT!

The D420 will be being released soon. Thinner, lighter, better. Alternatively, buy the D620 now. It's only 280g heavier than the 410 but it's dual core, better screen (with the WXGA+ screen), great connectivity, slim, better chassis. Honestly, there's no reason to get the D410 in preference. We've now got 10 in service , with only the 1.83GHz Core Duo and they are fast as hell.

Added bonus, you don't need a separate media slice to hold your optical drive. Look, the D620s start low enough that you could look at a well-specced machine, and still have money left over for a docking station and external TFT screen.

The primary advantage of the 820 would be a bigger screen and resolutions up to 1920x1200, but it's over a kilo heavier than the 410 you specced, and 800g heavier than the 620. Given that you specced a light weight machine I assumed that that was a consideration. We don't have an 820 in service yet, but I would expect it to be every bit as good as the 620, which'd make it very good, but heavy if he's going to be using it on the move. Your call, but I'd still give him the 620 with a dock if it were me unless he NEEDED that higher resolution screen. You do get better discrete graphics chipsets with the 820, but from what you describe as his usage habits that'd be utterly irrelevant.
