Question Time to replace comp, what do you think of my selection?

Well my athlon XP system has now hit the end of the line i feel. And will be selling it off to help fun my next project. Which is currently looking like this:

    Asus Vintage AH1 Barebones System
    AMD Opteron 144
    Corsair 2GB DDR V/S (2x1GB)
    WD Caviar SE 200GB HDD
Asus 16x16 DVD RW (mainly chosen to match the case)

i will be using the integrated graphics for a few weeks while i gather some money together for a 7600gt.

So my questions are: - does ayone know of any incompatabilities/problems whth any of the items listed? or can anyone suggets anything better?

    all helps appreciated!

budget of roughly £400 excluding graphics card, whose budget shall be decided by how often i go to the pub while saving. so thats irrelevant at this stage.

in that case its probably not that bad, however, make sure the psu in there is good enough to support a decent card when you want to upgrade

ah yes, its supposedly only a 300w. what case/mobo would you reccomend for around the £100 mark? small(ish) cases are preferred as im moving from a shuttle and dont want to go back to anything huge

thats a pretty hard one tbh, i'm not really au fait with sff stuff. And my usual reccomendation of tagan psu, tj01 and an epox mobo would cost somewhere in the 150 quid region

    and

    http://www.savastore.com/productinfo...d=207&rstrat=0

    comes to £120.

You could skimp on the case/psu more but i would not recomend it if you are adding a good gpu, actually that mobo has no intergrated gpu, wouldnt it be better to buy all at ones, just delay the system for a short time.

Also you could save £30ish with a retail 2300+ instead of the 144 which would overclock pretty well also. Its 2.0GHz with 512 cache instead of 1.8GHz with 1mb cache so they are about equal.

Go for a Chieftec dragon .. you should be able to find one for about £60 with a 360W psu.. i think komplett used to do them.
    AMD3000+ ATIX800XL + GBNF44x mobo.. all at stock because they're good enough atm + CA A1 amp-->Mission 73S Loigtech MX1000 + 1GB ram + 1/3 TB HD array
Wintendo XP + Linux (when it works) .. just incase you were wondering

im kind of leaning that way. the buyer of current comp is going to take slightly longer than id hoped to get the money together, which i guess is good in a way as ill be able to plan what im getting a bit better.

    just out of interest -

    Shuttle sn45g
    Barton 2500+
    1gb corsair value select 3200 2.5ns
    Geforce 6600GT 128mb AGP
120GB Maxtor Diamondmax +9 ATA HDD
    SONY DRU-510 DVD-RW (Silver)
    Mitsumi Floppy (Silver)
    802.11b wireless card
    Upgraded Exhaust fax

selling it for £250, is that a fair price?

    oh.. and

    linkin park?!

This has the largest PSU of any uATX case I have seen at 420W:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=274609

If you goto Microdirect or Ebuyer then they do ones with different coloured fronts and optional side windows if that is your thing I hope to get my hands on one soon at work, I shall be interested to see how it looks in real life.

Have you looked at the Silverstone 'SG01-E Sugo' ? It's a SFF case and not too big can take a normal PSU and lots of Space.

    http://www.hardware-review.net/html/...ticle&sid=1052

Potential for upgrading and lots of space, Custom PC did a review some time ago.

Yerp, Sogo is an excellent case. The finish is classy and it would look good in your living room.

iv actually been looking at the X-Qpack, and its certainly on my shortlist. the silverstone, while its a very nice case, is more than i would like to spend on just a case. im not looking for anything fancy here, just a setup thats compatable with maximum bang for buck

rainbow - yes i am interested in the 144, but im not working to a timeline i would like to, so when i would be able to buy it is up in the air at the moment.

and the only time iv heard "i'm about to break" said is in a linkin park song.

i seem to be considering going for full size ATX to enable me to bag a SLI motherboard. the extra the mobo costs is negated by the cheaper case/psu combo i could get. while im not LOOKING to back to midi towers there are certainly advantages in being able to get higher spec conponents with money saved.

    Which way to go eh?
