    best, long term archival media

well, i am growing concerned about if i will be able to access my media in 20 - 30 years time, especially with this new scare about how CDs and DVDs degrade, i have heard that flash memory is the best way to archive things for long term, but is prohibitavly expensive. could anyone recomend to me what the best way to arhive digital data is, without it being too expensive.

    thanks in advance!

The best thing to do is take it in stages as new types of media are released.

A fews years back you might have a good few CDs full of data. Now you'll have DVDs and as BluRay and HD-DVD are release you can back up onto those and keep a few copies in different places.

If you're talking large amounts of data then hard drives and tapes are best. It's always good to have remote backups too, incase something really bad happens, eg. Fire.

    Hope that helps

The trick is to refresh the archive data on new media periodically. Whatever the media I wouldn't trust it to long-term storage. Duplicate copies are a sensible precaution and keeping them at different locations will protect against fire/theft. New backup media and devices are being developed all the time. What's to say the CD drive will even exist in 30 years time. Just keep copying your data to whatever media/device is common place and validate the copy with a file comparison before you dispose of the old copy. USB/Firewire HDDs are cheap and convenient with high capacities as of now. Don't trust anything to a single copy.

YOu can get online archival (of site) from places like streamload.com (who do 20GB free but you have a download limit of 100mb a month and 10mb a time but you can always upload loads and then pay if something happens to the rest.

how much data do i need to store, well about 60 - 100gib right now, maybe another the same in a couple of years.....

i dont need that much access to the data in the interim, probabally just retreiving things i need once or twice a year

i was hoping to avoid having to refresh, but ok.

hmm, how much are tape drives? and are we talking reel to reel or casette? what sort of capacity do they usually have?

    thanks in advance!

I would get another Hard Drive and store it on that and also make DVD backups.
