if you have a router, then you will be able to make it work, you plug the uplink port of the switch into the router and away you go

A switch just sends packets from one computer to another, it won't translate them and put them on another network, which is what the router does

not strictly true, you can run one machine as a DHCP server, if it has 2 ethernet ports it can pull a line from outside and split it across the switch.

a router will run a designated gateway, allowing each connection to have dedicated 100MBs of bandwidth (assuming its a 100Mb router)

so if its a switch it is possible, as long as uve one computer running dhcp
