    Do I need water-cooling?

Spent the past 2 hours refitting my CNPS9500-AT on my Asus P5WD2. Tried to thin down the amount of thermal compound (ceramique).

Then I went back into windows, only to find out my PD920 now tops at 72'C

I'm just wondering, I'm supposingly using one of the best air cooler out there, but it acts so poorly? Is there a possibility that the heatpipe is broken? Though the base of the heatsink is not as hot as the sensor says.

I'm getting pissed when the system keep auto-shutdown due to overheat (damn summer).

what else can I do to get it cool down before I think of goiing watercooling?

Thats defo not right mate. My Pentium 8xx series chip (which run hotter) dont come close to that in a shuttle.
Either, the HSF is broken, or the readings are duff. Are you running the latest BIOS ?

What were your readings with the stock cooler?
I think you had a previous thread relating to this didn't you?
I think the simple answer to your query in this thread is that you shouldn't need water cooling to cool down the CPU in question...although I see you've got a 1.2GHz overclock on each core?
What happens temperature-wise if you run the CPU at stock speeds?

I didn't use the stock cooler and went straight to the CNPS9500-AT

With the CPU running at stock I'm getting 62'C full load

    Update:
Odd, my system just auto-shutdowned again at 50'C @ stock freq. Wondering what's wrong with it. Looks like PSU is not keeping up or something. More problems for me to deal with

Maybe this is too obvious but what's the airflow like in the case?

2x8cm exhaust plus PSU exhaust, 4x8cm intake, and a 12cm intake blowing towards the cpu hsf.

erm, turn off overclocks? with P4s its advised to use water cooling (in the review on tomshardware he recommends watercooling). I would go so far as to say to get phase cooling if you want to cool it . Just to make you feel better my Opty 175@2.8Ghz tops out at 51oC load (ambient room temp: 44oC) with AC Freezer 64 Pro @ full RPM (antec P180 case)

Ordered some Arctic Silver 5 and hope it's going to help. And, its really slow without the overclocking

Ofcorse you need water cooling, however the question is do you NEED it?

EDIT: sorry im am being unhelpful again.

It does indeed sound as if there is something wrong with the temp measurers Does you heatsink use heatpeipes as possibly one of those is broken? Otherwise as long as it is fitted properly, and the fan is going, i dont see how that could be the problem. Try a bios update.

Just for reference, I've got the same cooler on a Pentium D 805 OCed to 3.36GHz in a CM Stacker 830 and it tops out at about 45 degrees under full load, as reported by Asus PC-Probe (so quite inaccurate then )

How much pressure is the clip exerting? Insufficient pressure is enough to wreck the cooling all by itself!

    Toms. lol.
The amount of errors in the way they test things is just amazing.
