    (near) silent DVD-RW drive...

    Can anyone recommend their DVD-RW drive as being particularly quiet in operation? I find mine can make a hell of a racket when spinning up sometimes. Admittedly for DVD's it's okay as it's not at full tilt, but it'd be nice to have it quiet even when spinning up a game disc...

    My NEC 4550 (I think is the model number...) is quieter than some I've heard, but I wouldn't say it was *very* quiet.

    You may find that isolating it from the case will help. This is easily done for HDDs, but perhaps not so easy for DVD drives...

    I think in general, most modern good quality DVD drives are quiet...mine is an LG which I bought for £60....its really quiet....just a little wirr when burning DVD's

    I just use DriveSpeed to slow it down & hence near silent

    You really need to slow new drives down....

    I have the Plextor 716A, LiteOn LightScribe 16x and the NEC 3550A.

    None of them are what I would call quiet, at all

    I doubt there is any that is quiet, but you can limit the speed of virtually any drive so that's no a problem.
    Primary kit:

    Samsung SH162A is pretty quiet - a damn sight quieter than the NEC 3520 it replaced. Still make some noise, but its much less intrusive.

    I haven't noticed my sony dvd-rw making a racket when writing discs, but really depends on what environment it is in - all relative

    A word that I can't begin to describe for my NEC 4551 drive...DriveSpeed is enabled on this drive 24/7

    Well mine certainly isn't when reading. In fact it's bloody irritating, and much louder than my NEC 2500A. It is pretty quiet when writing though.

    I find my nec (3xxx something) pretty loud at times! scan have the pioneer 111 on special today... reduced size drive might be just the thing for my htpc... but my current drive has the required specs... damn temping offers
