I just replaced my NEC 3520 with a Samsung SH-162A. Its a good deal quieter, although I haven't tried burning any disks yet...

Asus drives are good. Are you looking for a DVD-ROM or a DVD Writer (or both)???

Im looking for a DVD writer myself and am torn between an NEC (always gone for NEC before), ASUS and Sony (very cheap)

    Have you read this thread
    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=75263

Seems like NEC is the best DVD burner for the money. Pioneer also worth a look.

Not sure about DVD-ROM. Pioneer or Plextor if you can afford it.
