best air cooler

Depends how much you want to spend. In the bargain basement there's the CM Xdream and TT Volcano9 but it's well worth paying a little extra for the Volcano 11 or 12. All those have manual adjustability so you can decide how much perf you want relative to noise levels.

Only way up from there is the professional (expensive) HS like TR AX-7/SLK-800, Alpha PAL 8045/8942 and Swift MCX462+. Good fans to use with these are TT Smart Fan 2 (as used on the Volc11 & 12) or Vantec 's Aeroflow which uses TMD for maximum airflow. SLK-800(A?) may be the best to go for as it's easier to mount than many of these pro HS and is known to work VERY well with a TT Smart Fan 2 mounted on it. Verify all of this before you buy, it's been a little while since I last looked indepth to HS and there may be newer ones out etc.

Thermaltake slk700 is one of the best you can get and ive seen it for £20 or less

go for a thermaltake, i'm running the slk800. you get to use standard 80mm fans, so gives you a lot more choice over fan noise / airflow.

I'm Running the slk800 & tt case fan 2, 1700+ DLT3C @ 3200+ 1.65v (Temps as I'm typing are CPU 38c BOARD 21c)
Max full load temps CPU 42c BOARD 25c

I wouldn't rec a Tornado as they are insanely loud. Be sure you need £40+ HSF before you buy as the Volcano 11/12 (though obviously not quite as good) do come with a Smart Fan 2 (intelligent and adjustable) included for only £15ish from either www.dabs.com/uk or www.cpucity.co.uk IIRC.

The best?

SLK-947U (compatible with more motherboards than the SLK-900U), couple it with a Vantec Tornado (92x38) and a fan controller of some sort (the Tornado is loud) and you'll have probably the best air cooling set-up.

BTW, will this be an AMD or P4 system? The SLK-947U works in both setups, but if it's a P4, then the SP-94 is probably the best P4 air cooler out there.

Definitely the best option imo .. to have the ability to silence it altogether when watching DVDs, doing work etc... and then just to be on the safe side ramping it up when playing games (you get the best of both worlds - silence and excellent performance).

I understand what you mean but just because you can get bottom end water coolers for similar prices to the high end air coolers doesn't mean the water is better at all. Much like air coolers, low end water coolers are pretty poor and I bet you could easily get a mid-range air cooler that can out-perform them for less than half the cash. Not only that but water cooling can be science all on its own. If you go water cooling be sure to spend a lot of time researching and implimenting the system, decent water cooling is neither simple nor cheap.
