Anybody else experience Cyclictic Redundancy Checks?

Hey guys, just wondering if any of you get this a lot when burning your dvds and trying to transfter them back to a HDD at a later date. If i burn a dvd with a serious amount of files on it, the dvd drive will stop and announce a "cyclic redundancy check".

I dont think it is just me, as it happend on a mates PC as well. Its just really annoying when you copy something and need to put it back on HDD and find that its basically a dead disc. I dont know if it is a case of cheap writers/readers or something that occurs regularly with dvd writers. Any ways around this sort of problem? One time i had this problem and the DVD reader in the other room read the files fine, but the writer it was burned on had problems which i found very weird- perhaps its laser/ reading method was better!?

    Cheers!

    Kev

run a memtest on your memory also , CRC errors can be down to faulty memory

Agreed...memtest is your friend. Download the bootable .iso and you can run it straight from CD

If memory is fine, try cleaning the drive

I had a COD2 disc bundled with 1 of my cards - this kept getting CRC errors at about 78%

Installation worked after I put the lense cleaner in and cleaned the drive.

Agree with Lee, but I have seen these errors on 'older' computers that just can't chuck the data on to the disc fast enough for it to catch up. Mind you 'buffer underrun' technology should sort that....

ok, get this guys- im running iso buster on the offending discs, and they're extracting the files to the drive with no problems at all. Yet a standard windows drag and drop transfer fails!

If all else fails blame windows.... so what does iso buster do that windows doesnt!

Check the files content though - they may weel be corrupt. I used to get CRC errors with the brand of +R disks I was using - Bulkpaq on my (£350!) Philips DVD+r/RW. I chnaged disk and writer (£40) Pioneer 108 and no more errors...

Won't help your current situation maiden, but if you're using Nero to burn your discs, I always always use the Verify Data option to check that it's all burned correctly. I've had discs burned by mates before who don't use this, and got CRC errors, just because they can't wait the 6 mins or so it takes to make sure that the data that's on the disc is exactly how you want it.

In my experience this is usually caused by cheap media.

Even if the burn finishes without throwing up an error it doesn't mean the discs are error free.

Plus, some cheap media over time degrades pretty quickly, especially if you've burned the discs at greater than recommended speed.

As someone else here said verify your discs in Nero after burning.

A standalone programme, which is very good, is CDCheck.

I tend to scan all my important stuff with this after burning.

Also defrag your drive before burning and don't run anything else whilst burning, just in case.

You haven't told us which burner you're using and which media.

Whatever burner you've got make sure you've upgraded the firmware to the latest version.

And though it's a bit late in the day now, don't buy cheap media (I know someone is bound to reply that they only buy the cheapest of the cheap Bulkpaq or Prodisc crap and they've never had a problem, but why take the risk if the contents are important to you).

These are the best discs I've used. Never had a coaster or a crc problem with them:

Oh, and before I forget, never touch the underside of a disc, never put down on your desktop, and always keep them in a case away from sunlight and excess heat.
