    New Agp Card ?

    I have an AMD 2600+ (Barton) 333FSB 512 L2 Cache with an ASUS A7V8X-X Mobo and Kingston PC2700 512 DDR Ram.

    I have now decided to get rid of my old Asus 3800C NV AGP Card.

    Any advice as to what I should replace it with? My budget stretches to !50 Sterling.

    TIA,

    Vijay

    Edit .. Corrected spelling.

    either a 2nd hand gf4ti4200, or perhaps a 2nd hand radeon8500 (might be a few quid cheaper aswell), bear in mind tho that both those cards are only directx8 (maybe 8.1 for the radeon - i'm unsure), but regardless i'm sure it will be a huge performance leap from your old card

    Asus 3800C? Was that a Rad7500? If it was you'd be in GF2GTS / GF4MX420 type territory so anything will be a BIG step up. However shopping for cards below £100 really cripples your PC's gaming perf.

    In terms of new cards the FX5200, Rad9600SE, Rad9000PRO, Rad9200PRO are the best choices (of a bad bunch). GF4MX, Rad9200, 9100 and 9000 are a fair bit slower. You will find clock speeds and hence perf varies with these entry level cards so you may not even get the perf you should.

    For 2nd hand cards you should pick up a GF4TI4200 if you can as they are as fast as Rad9600PRO and GF-FX5600ultra in raw 3D speed (you miss out on DX9 and AA+AF), but way faster than the sub £100 new offerings available. As said Rad8500 (inc 8500LE) are still good cards but again clock speed always varied a LOT for thse, ensure you are at least 250/250 (250/500 inc DDR talk). Rad8500 are still better even at 250/250 than the fully clocked Rad9000-9200PRO. GF3 can be an option for good raw perf. TI500 & original GF3 are equal to a Rad8500 while TI200 often o/c to similar speeds. GF3 like GF2 are VERY weak outside of gaming though, suffering from poor '2D' image quality etc.

    2nd Hand Radeon 8500, or a GF4 ti4200 are def. the best bets. Anything new for around that price just isn't good enough.

    I currently use a GF4 ti4200, and play Day of Defeat (the only game I play, I'm in a decent clan, and addicted!) at 1600 x 1200 and get a solid 100fps. (max refresh rate). Come very highly recommened, just don't try it with and DX9 games

    EDIT : I picked up a Radeon 8500 for £30 3 months ago - Just be patient, or put in a Wanted ad.

    Sorry guys just read my orignal post.

    I meant 100 -150 Sterling and not 50 sterling . The exclamation mark was supposed to be a 1.

    Sorry once again

    Lol.

    In that case you want what I've just ordered - an All in wonder (AIW) Radion 9800SE for £150 - £165 depending on where you buy from [Ebuyer were at £150 for a 'made by ATI' and OCUK are selling the Herculese (sp) branded one for a bit more].... there was some speculation on the herc one giving a fractionally higher mod success chance.

    £150 is more like it. For that money you have the following options ...

    RADEONS:
    * Rad9600PRO - great o/c'er, easily exceed 9600XT speed.
    * Rad9600XT - higher stock speed and should use intelligent fan, still some o/c in it too.
    * Rad9800SE - 2 versions, you want the 256bitDDR 380/340 version. That's as fast a 9600XT. It lacks o/c'ing potential but you have a 30%ish(?) chance of softmodding it to a 9800PRO.
    * Rad9500PRO - still better than all the above cards esp when you o/c. No longer produced so 2nd hand deals only.
    * Rad9700/PRO - easily faster than all the above and as good as 9800 esp when you o/c. No longer produced so again look for 2nd hand deals.

    GF-FX (dodgy architecture?):
    * GF-FX5600ULTRA - 2 versions out and even the faster flipchip model is still well below a Rad9600PRO.
    * GF-FX5700ULTRA - faster than 9600XT in pure 3D but the FX archy means you gamble a bit esp in the longer term.
