Hay all,
Quick question, can your mainboard battery (the one that looks after the bios) ever run out ? - eg does it need replacing every year ?

Intel Core i7 5930k @ 3.7Ghz Turbo
MSI X99A Gaming 7
16Gb Corsair DDR4 2667Mhz
2x SLI MSI GTX 980
2x 500Gb SSD's (Raid 0)
EVGA 1000w PSU
Windows 7 Pro 64Bit
G-Sync AOC G2460PG 1080p
LG Flatron W2261VP
They usualy last about 3 years. When it goes flat your PC will loose bios settings especialy the realtime clock.
99% of PCs use a CR2032 size battery that is widely avalabe and will cost you about £2. Once you have replaced it you will have to setup your BIOS setttings again.
Oh so it will actually eventually go flat. lol i've had this computer close to 3 years now.. the last time i checked, the battery level was about 3.104v - So does it need replacing ? - I don't wanna just wait untill it goes flat, and my pc just won't boot one day lol

Sometimes they will last a lot longer.
No, no. Your PC WILL still boot, but it'll just load with the BIOS defaults (including date, boot device order, that sort of thing).
Oh, well if thats the case, then it probably still wouldn't boot through to windows, cause of the hard drive's being in a array, meaning bios defaults wouldn't work.Originally Posted by nichomach
So is 3.104v an ok battery level ?

Plus its not hard to change the battery if you need to, and they can be got anywhere, check ebay
you gotta remember - the battery is only used if the pc is disconnected from the mains - if its connected but not turned on it uses power from the psu

Or your local Tesco, Boots, Lloyds pharmacy, Jewlers etc. Those batteries are also found in watches, Calculators, Car remotes etc.Originally Posted by DragonStar
No need to pay postage from eBay, just buy one next time your are in town anyway.
From what I rememeber, my teacher told me they normally last between 4-8 years.
yeah you can, but from what i can remember you can get them for practically pence from ebay with minimal postage, i got 6 i think for a couple of quid, whereas when i bought some from a store i think i paid about £4 for 2
I rememeber when they refitted my dads work.
- They moved all the PCs out, refitted it, and put the PCs back.
Everyone came in next monday morning, hit the power button, bois is reset, clock gone...
Turns out non of the computers had been turned off for about 5years, and the battery in every single one of them was nackered!

Nice one! So as long as you leave the pc plugged into the mains, and the mains socket is always turned on, then the battery never gets used!Originally Posted by 5lab
Guess the lesson to learn here is, always check the battery voltage level befor you ever unplug your computer from the mains.Originally Posted by Oshta
- oh yeah, one other thing, not important but weird. The other day when i was messing about inside the case, i noticed a noise, if i put my ear close to the mainboard, i can here this weird little ticking... I guess this must be the internal clock hu ?
