    Lightbulb

All good advice. If you're thinking about adding a second graphics card at some point for SLI (nvidia) you will need to set yourself up for this from the start by buying the necessary kit to support this.

Namely, the mobo and the PSU will need to be 'SLI-Ready'. For more info, get the low down from the horse's mouth at www.slizone.com (a website operated by nvidia).

I'm in the process of speccing a new system at the moment too. Now that AMD's AM2 technology has launched, I'm going to go with that in order to 'future-proof' the purchase as far as possible. Scan have already got a handful of mobos but no CPUs in stock to date. Hopefully, it won't be long and the prices won't increase.

    What board are you using???

How can the Dual Core Pentium cost half as much as the Dual Core Athlon? Have the tables turned lately and Pentium's are now cheaper than Athlon's?

And when is this new "Conroe" chip coming out? I presume it will be a very expensive chip to get?

I'm having to rethink this whole upgrade to bring the cost down a bit, so the Pentium D 805 at £90 is quite tempting, but I know nothing about the latest Intel systems. What boards are good (and Woodchuck2000, bump for the what board are you using question!) and is there any different RAM requirements? Graphics card wise, a 7900GT is still on the cards, but I will be looking round for a nice cheap one in a few weeks hopefully, have to get some other things before I can upgrade now.

i can see the pickle you are in. Intel conroe is out now, but its expensive and your only be able to pick up and engineering sample from the likes of ebay along with a motherboard.

if i where you i would wait untill conroe is properly released in july (28th iirc) then buy it when its released. it shouldnt be that expensive, and the performance will be greater than an x2 3800 even when its overclocked highly.

oh and as for now yes the pentium 805d is a very good chip, esp as its around £85 which has been mentioned already. But agian only when its been heavily overclocked will it rival an X2 from AMD. but if you do decide on getting one, at least your have the DDR2 memory sorted for conroe or in 2007 AM3 (although that will use ddr3) .

Will the 805 D and the Conroe use the same socket, or will I need a new motherboard if I decide to get a Conroe in a couple of months? If they'll be the same, I could get an £85 805 D and then upgrade to a Conroe in a few months.

    805 D needs DDR2 then?

right as far as i know conroe will be based on 775, and the only board i can find is the Intel D975XBX 'Bad Axe', so its more than likely you will need a new motherboard bios update, or check the board you are going for will be compatable for it. there will be a new chipset though 965 and 985 and probably 995 later on.

    805 d needs ddr2 yes
