Budget? id say youd be easier going dual core rather than dual CPU and a fair bit cheaper. Have you thought about an Athlon 64 X2 or the pentium D (entry level chip amazingly cheap)

One of my friends has an X2 3800+ and he says it flies thru folding units compared to his p4 systems.

Two folding clients in one rig....luvverly.
Hoping to add some X2's to my folding collection soon.

I have a Cheiftec dragon server case that i want to put to use.

The X2 3800 sounds a good option, with 1GB of ram i think.

Not sure about motherboard selection mind.

Re the board..........depends if you want to overclock or not.
For overclocking the Asus and DFI boards are a popular choice.

If running at stock then any board that has the features you need should suffice.

1gig probably isnt enough for 2 clients unless its a dedicated machine, i know some of teh work units back when i stopped folding were getting into the 400mb range, which was frankly too large to run, i was paging like crazy with anymore than ff open

2 gig of value ram, such as Crucial wouldn't cost too much these days and if overclocking you could always use a divider.

I would say Dual Opteron 265 if you got the money

I wonder how folding deals with memory/cpu error?

Quite a few options but I use Thermalright sinks myself.
They offer great cooling and also quiet cooling as one can use a larger fan.

    I would suggest the XP90 or XP120.*

    Check out the options here
If you get a 120 just make sure it is ok with your board, as, on one or two board caps get in the way.
The compatibility list is at the site.

Many people seem happy with Arctic Cooling sinks but never tried one myself.

    *Note......you buy the fan separately.
