    CD drive....

Is it possible to convert an ide optical drive to run off USB?
I want to have an optical drive built into a desk I am making for my A2 tech project but do not want the bulk of an external drive.

    Thanks

    Yup, you can get them.
Powering it will be more of an issue

A USB to IDE adaptor will do the trick....some come supplied with power adaptors, some don't, so you may want to look into that sort of thing.

Or buy a 5&1/4 inch external housing and simply hook it up?

That's what I initially thought dave, but then it wouldn't be any different from an external drive in the first place, and he doesn't want the bulk of that

well then your suggestion would be right, though you may aswell go for the 5&1/4 one as he then wont have to make the brackets etc to mount it

but yes, I should read the OP more closely

mounting brackets are far too complicated for me, I shall probably just continue my current roll of just using a hell of a lot of west systems' epox to hold it in place

    Thanks for the replies
