Give it try more ram is allways better hunt for some second hand stuff dont spend a fortune just incase is does not solve your problem.
Have you tried a fresh install of xp you might see a slight increase of speed with a nice clean windows.

Those old P2s mainly used EDO RAM or SD RAM (not DDR), depending on the age of the motherboard.

EDO is very difficult to find, whereas SD RAM can be found more easily. Just so you know it's not as simple as buying any old type of RAM.

theres applications out there that allow you to pare down your copy of windows xp to the most minimum of system files. Ive seen a computer running windows xp with 64 megs of ram from a 128meg compact flash card. Maybe you dont need to go to that extreme but its still worth a shot.

Try googling for XPlite or Nlite or something, cant remember what its called :-P

what is the max you are willing to spend. as to be honest wasnt 400mhz the min for windows xp?

my advice would be buy / build a better baseunit within you budget, that pc is going to struggle with xp no matter how much ram you put in it, any more money you throw into the pc is effectively wasted - sorry to say that; i am all for keeping current pc's and making them last as long as possible, but you wont get an acceptably working xp system with that.

try nLite as said above, remove the components you don't need, lose the default luna theme and use the classic theme and disable all Visual Effects. That should hopefully speed things up.

You should be ok with 320mb of RAM.

I've used this method before on old p2 laptops that probably really shouldn't be running winxp.

If your planning on running Vista on it you may need to upgrade a few things, lol.
