hey guys, basically i am torn between two CPU coolers, the Thermalright SI-120 or the Scythe ninja , although the ninja looks very heavy, dont know if i could trust it. I am currently using a gigabyte g power pro, and its a little bit blue and noisey for my liking
any one here got either of the two? any comments?
Sythe ninja IMO. I've got an XP-120 running fanless with a duct to my rear case fan. Works OK but no more than OK. With my fans on 12v i get a load temp or about 45C and 5V idle is about 36 with CnQ enabled.
Ninja's meant to work a bit better IIRC
Ninja has a great reputation but I'm a big fan of the Zalman CNPS9500, its worth a look if your not set on one of those two, its new version looks awesome and its cooling power is fantastic.
You should also consider the arctic cooling freezer 64 pro
I went with the Scythe Ninja over the Zalman & AC64 for 2 reasons: 120mm fan (not 92 or 100).
Fan can be replaced by another standard one if required without modding the HSF (too much faffing about).
It's not that heavy at all - most of the weight's at the base anyway. It's a bit of a bugger to fit though - definately needs to be done before the mobo goes into the case. Can't comment on if the AC64, Zalman or SI-120 are any easier, as I've not used these.
The Zalman is a peach to install, you don't even need to remove the mobo on most 939 boards. YOu just take out the default cooler, clean ervything up, dot of Tim tand pop it on, a little piece of metal goes accross and bolts into the already present holes, you can do it in about 2 mins. I think the AC64 may even use the default retention bracket but don't hold me on that.
As mentioned, the Ninja's not actually as heavy as it looks. The aluminium fins are very thin, and spaced widely apart, so there's not as much mass as it looks like. It's not the easiest thing to install, but it's not that bad either.
The Ninja Plus that Scan stock also come with a reasonably good 120mm fan.

the olny problem with the ninja over the zalman, is that it wont provide airflow over the vrms and things around the CPU, where as this is where ythe SI-120 will win.
its a tough choice. SO the ninja has to take mobo out before fitting, does ti come with a new retension bracket, because i think my asus is stuck on.
edit just looked at the 9500zalman and i love the green fan lol :) !!! also they have made a new bracket for it !!
Ninja comes with it's own backplate. The existing ones normally come off pretty easy if you just twist them slightly.
My biggest problem with the Ninja was getting my big hands into the clips to install it fully, simply because it's a big cooler.
i have an si-120 that i used for a few months and i couldnt fault it at all, was easy to fit and kept things round the pwmic nice and cool with virtually no noise....ive gone watercooled so i dont use it now, but wouldnt hesitate to go back to it if i dumped the watercooling.
The new Zalman looks great, you can also choose where the whole thing points so that the airflow goes where its needed.
