    nforce 4 sli chipset cooler?

    Hi

I have a new motherboard on the way (asus a8n-sli se) and was wondering if its ok to remove the chipset fan and replace it with a zalman ZM-NB32J northbridge cooler which I have from my old pc. I ask because its kinda old so I wanted to be sure it would be ok with modern chipsets. From zalmans website: "ZM-NB32J is compatible with all Northbridge chipsets that do not have a built-in graphics core".

I guess it'd be ok then yes? Or would you recommend I just keep the fan which comes preinstalled?

It depends what graphics card you have from emmeory, if you have something that overhangs the Northbridge then I don't think the zalman will fit, although I have never tried personally that has always stopped me from trying.

(edit - sorry about the huge pic)

Really? Looking at the board I think it will fit. I am not planning to use 2 graphics cards so my 7600gt will go in the blue pci express slot.

    Thoughts?

Depends how big the Graphics cards are i suppose and how big the fan assembly is.

I've got a Zalman cooler on my deluxe nad it fits beautifully, if your GFX card does overhang the Northbridge just rotate the cooler so it lines up and if the card is bigger than the slots in it gently bend the fins outwards to make room, they're suprisingly soft. Be wary though, mine can get pretty damn warm, the onboard sensor is waaay off. Asus probe reports it as 26 degrees while both my digital thermometers show it as around 40.

You have the same board? Did you keep the stock chipset fan then? Is it noisy/any problems?

Is that worrying tho, that hot? It won't cause damage in the long term will it?

I'll be using a thermaltake soprano case with a front, side and rear fan. This is the card I will be using:

    Thanks everyone for your help.

IIRC the safe operating temperature goes up to 55C or something of that nature, I have a spare 80mm fan silently caressing it. Massive improvement over the whiney original setup.

Seriously was stunned, there was I happily looking at my PC probe, bent down to check everything was tightly fastened and it was baking hot. I'd seriosuly recommend keeping an eye on it and at least ensuring good airflow.

Good airflow is paramount. Not just a matter of having fans but making sure everything is tidy in your case.

The northbridge fan failed on my a8n sli just last week. I purchased the Zalman NB47J from scan and that works great. Many people have reported similar success from a search on google. The only reservation is the graphics card as people have said above, but for a 6600GT (my card) or the 7600GT you should be fine as they are shorter than the higher performance cards.
