DVD-RAM why ?

What is the deal with these discs ?
The only advantage I see in them, is that you can overwrite them up to 100,000 times, thus meaning safer storage that a DVD+/-RW disc..


Anyone got any comments on DVD-RAM discs ?

aren't they a lot more fragile tho (making your data far less safer..)? I seem to remember caddies being touted as being necessary for them

i thoguht u could whack a DVD in the drive and drag files onto it, even Donload directly onto it

DVD-RAM was touted as a credible alternative to backup tapes, due to the error checking facilities it encorporated. It was superior to tape in one way - that it reads more liike a hard disk than a tape, however it was as expensive, if not more, than comparable tape drives, so few adopted it.

Exactly, it acts just like a large floppy disk or external hard drive. Not sure what else you are after.

Think of it as a removable hard disk, but much easier to store :)

It can cope much better with files being deleted/overwritten, due to the non-sequential nature, so is ideal for backups.

You can get some with caddies - it's not because they are particularly fragile, but just so they last longer. They were designed for video recorders - so you can imagine the kids messing around with a stack of discs, throwing them around, etc. The PC ones just come in a normal case however.

One tip (took me ages to get this figured) - Win XP has native support for DVD-RAM, but you have to disable packet writing for the drive to get it to work properly (My Computer, Right-click, Properties). Then you can just drag and drop to your heart's content!!

Got a single sided one coming to me soon. Will be using to store all my photos on, sounds perfect.

Also real useful sitting underneath the TV. A nice clean media for recording/re-recording your stuff from the tele-box.

That is what i use them for, in my panny es10 dvd recorder.

dvd-ram at first is made from panasonic for its own dvd recorder, it is better made compare to rw disc, only certain drive will read and write dvd-ram, and it is more deal.

Hmm, just received my DVD-RAM disc and it is in a cartridge.....I assume I can somehow open that cartridge and take the disc out to go in my LG Multi-DVD writer ??

I have an LG DVD-RW that can record to RAM discs. I didn't seen any use in it,, but I'm curious now.

iirc one advantage of dvd-ram is it can read and write at same time. as in timeshifting video.
