Big enough PSU?

Hi All,

I currently have a Tagan 480-U1 (480W) PSU which I bought a while back when I first put together my Socket A system. Now I am just about to jump to Socket 939 and I would like to know if this PSU is big/reliable enough to be used in the following system:

Asrock 939dual-SATA
X2 3800+
3 SATA hard disks
1 DVD-RW
1 X-Fi soundcard
1 LAN card
and a Radeon 9800Pro AGP (it will do for now!)

Now I am wondering whether in the future it would be possible to power a ATI X1800 with this PSU or am I likely to need a new one?

Has anyone any ideas that they would like to share?

Im pretty sure your Tagan will be fine (does it have a pci-e connector?) tbh

Unless you go sli/crossfire then 480W should be okay

I'd be suprised if that system used more than 200-250W

Unfortunately it doesn't have a pci-e connector, only a separate cable with a standard molex on that was designed to connect to power-hungry AGP cards - is there such a thing as a molex-to-pci-e adaptor, and more importantly where could I find one?

Yes it does have a 24-pin one, with a 20-pin "adaptor" that I am using for my Abit NF7 at the moment.

Most PC shops (particuarly the online places) will sell these - probably about £2 or £3 - Scan, cclonline, casetech etc etc

Also quite a few graphics cards eg. 7900GT come with the adaptors already in the box.

Its also worth remembering that good PSUs like yours will give their sustained rating, and not their peak. A “500 watt” q-tec will last a matter of seconds if 500 is drawn from it.
