    Antec P180

Hey everyone. I'm sorely tempted to buy meself an Antec P180 as a reward for finishing my first year of med school (when I do - one week and counting... ). Was just wondering if any of y'all had one or have heard bad stuff about one to put me off! All comments valuable (except those about it looking like a fridge - I know that, I like it )
    Cheers

    Door is flimsy

PSU Silicone thing will stick to the PSU and is hard to remove.

You need long cables to reach PSU and cable routing is a biatch

The tabs when removing sidepanels almost always break

Panels espically the front are known for warping, ALOT.

You have to open the door to turn the comp on (is a downside for me lol).

Made of steel and super heavy.

    Only comes with 2 fans

    Whew, is that enough? lol.

I was considering the p180 as an upgrade from my 2 year old antec p160. I then started looking around, and compared to lian-li cases they arent that good. (However Lian-Li do have a slight price premium) I would probably be choosing between a lian li and the eclipse, as they are both better cases.

what lian li would you recommend. It's funny, there are a massive number of positive reviews out there. More from those who have it please....

The general consensus is that the P150 is a better all round case than the P180. Unfortunately you have to buy it with a PSU included, so it costs slightly more.

Lian li cases have rubbish cooling, they try and make it complicated and it does not work lol, time and time agaiin i hear of systems over heating and crashed.

main problem with it is that mbos with heatpipe coolers cant work that way up afaik

I was tempted by the P180, but the weight put me off.

Still, my CM-201 may not be wide enough for the tallest heatsink. That puts me in a dilemma..

    I have got a P180 - awesome case

got the P180 and P180B from antec. Both are good, P180B is slighlty better inside as they improved some stuff. Very heavy case lol

Noni - my case came with 3 fans. Were you missing one?

I have the Akasa and the P180. Would recommend the Akasa if you like to fiddle alot with the system as it has loads more room.

I haven't transferred the system from the Akasa to the P180 yet so may have other negatives when I do.

The P180B (new black version, not the SPCR branded one) has cut outs on the PCI plates - some may argue to let dust in but it is supposed to be for cooling. There is also no VGA card duct, they give you clips to attach a fan to the upper HD tray to cool the VGA card.

I agree that the newer Lian Li's don't have very good cooling.

I have one of the silver P180's. I have to say its actually one of the better cases I have owned.

Major Issues to watch out for

PSU cable lengths, and the vga cooling assembly thing.

Also getting the cables all tidy inside is not for the feint of heart. Prob took me a good hour till I got it the way I liked it.

I've bought 10 or so P180 cases for system builds now, but I'll try not be biased .
I wouldn't buy them if I didn't think they were good cases, but there are some downsides to them...
As nimbu mentions, you need moderately long PSU cable lengths (the 4pin +12V connector and the 24pin ATX connector mostly).
Also the VGA cooling duct is just throwaway plastic...
Cable routing can be a pain, but can be done if you spend enough time thinking about it .

    As for Noni's points, specifically:
The tabs when removing sidepanels almost always break
Panels espically the front are known for warping, ALOT.

I'd have to argue with him on these .
You can't remove the sidepanels just as you would a normal case...i.e slide back, and then angle down to take them off. You have to pull off the side panels off at exactly 90degs to the case (i.e. don't angle the panel down first).
As for the Front Panel/Door, this was a major annoyance for me at first.

However, Antec have brought out a new revision of this, with a door that has a aluminum inlay too, to make it more like the side panels. This helps a lot, both with sound dampening and door bowing issues. For anyone that had bought 1st revision cases, if you send photos of your bent door to Antec, they will replace it for you with a new revision.
A tip though, that I learnt the hard way. You can't just replace the door (unless you want to do a bit of sanding).
On the new revision cases, the power and reset buttons are slightly inset into the front panel, and if you close a new rev. door on an old rev. power button, there's a little bit on the door which will push on the power button, turning your PC off/on when you close the door.
Antec will however, replace the front panel for you as well.

I've had to deal with them for several RMA's of the P150's PSUs, and some parts of the P180s, but I have to say they've dealt with all my queries satisfactorily.

    HTH

thanks fatalsaviour, most helpful. That's how it should be really - if there's an aspect tha's not up to scratch Antec should be more than willing to deal with it after you've shelled out for a costly piece of kit!

No problem at all Million .

Just to sum up the key points that have been changed for everyone's benefit (I've just copied this straight out another forum though (source:http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article....=16&CIID=24018)

Well i've gone an unpacked the most recently purchased P180 and it looks like most of everyone's complaints have been looked at in a new revision. I was pretty surprised... but a quick check on the box near the barcode listed P180 v1.1... so there you go. The wingey buggers get their way. hehe. Kudos to antec, they listen to their customers.

    Changes:
    * No more plastic cooling duct that everyone seems to do away with.
    * Slot covers have rectangular holes in them to allow them to act as vents.
    * Double (layered) strength re-enforced front door with far far better magnetic locking. No warping anymore and better sound dampening ladies and gentlemen.
    * Wire clips to allow the attachment of another optional 120mm fan to the back of the upper hard drive cage. This stops you from using it for hard drives, but provides two fans in series (one optional can be placed in front of the upper hd cage as before) to blow directly into the PCI/e area, cooling those hot graphics cards in replacement of the big plastic fan duct.

Yep, Antec has the best RMA service ever!

Remember, you asked me for the bad pionts .

Personally I would go for these cases-

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=137809

These cases have crap cooling, but look really nice IMO-

So fatal - I should just make sure that what I get is the v1.1 yeah? And enough already everyone, about the Akasa Eclipse - I think it's ugly as sin and looks like one of those horrid old beige things someone's just sprayed black, no style!
