CD Writer/ DVD reader combo: Why won't my music play?

    Hi guys

Over a year ago, I built a machine for family that had a SOny CD/CD-R/CD-RW and DVD drive in it....and any music CD's made in it (either backed up from original or made as comilations) wou'dnt play in our Vauxhall Astra CD player, but played elesewhere.

Using same blank media, but using non DVD reader drive sorted the problem.

    A year passed...

I built my new machine with a Liteon combo drive http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...roductID=94426
and I've just had the exact same thing!

    But in my Saab.

Disks made in a non DVD Liteon are good as gold, but anything made with this combo drive wont work in the car. They work in the Sony stereo in the house, but not in the car!

    What's going on?

Tried burning at a lower speed? Some drives in my experience are a bit funny with high speed burned cds.

    sadly....didn't work at 24x

Could this be an nForce4 driver issue? ie IDE drivers?

Wouldn't have thought drivers on the chipset would have made any difference. Perhaps if the disks didn't work in anything, then that could have been a cause, but not if they work in some players but not others.

I've had bad experiences with CD-Rs in car audio equipment. Had to use the VariRec option on my plextor to get them working in my old Golf CD player. VariRec alters the laster power and the size of the burned spots according the the particular disk. This helps picky drives read the disks. Can only be done with regular Mode 1 audio disks at 4x.

This player also had problems with a lot of 'copy protected' cds. Ironically, if i copied the disks they worked perfectly

I doubt it if you can use a normal CD-RW to burn the discs and they work. Have you changed media between the tests?

    no..same disks....same batch.

Update tho: the disks DO work....just not track 1!!!

If you hold down forward wind...it wont work either, but if you keep trying eventually the machine jumps to track 2 and then it's fine....all the toher tracks work

I tried disabling Overburn in case it was trying to use an inner track edge but thats not helped.

And these disks worked fine on my SCSI burner previously, and all of those cd's play inmy car.

    Weird.

Gonna uninstall Nero 6.6 Ultra and put the OEM suite in that came with the machine.

ah, you may need to burn a single second track one, then the rest of your audio

no way....cant be doing with that.

Just tried same batch of CD-R'sin my other rig, with older non DVD reader Liteon...worked straight away, burned at 52x sorted.

    This is confusing me

kept taking the burn speed down, and got a perfect copy at 12x.

Shame....but looks like this media (Infiniti Professional white Top 48x) , in this drive (Lireon Combo SOHC-5236 V) wont record music cd's with an image that my car can read track one of :/

weirdest thing is that the other PC with a 2 year old Liteon (non DVD combo) will do it at 52x straight off...has done for 2 years!

    What's the burning software?

And is it configured to add a 2 second gap before the first track? I know on my computer Nero insists on putting a gap before the first track, and then all the rest can be a seamless transition. Could be for this kind of compatability problem.
If you can't keep up, stick with reality...

I believe the 2 second gap is part of the CD Audio standard and that is why Nero insists on it. There is probably a reason for it, but i have no idea whay that could be

Apps such as iTunes and WMP don't give you the option to have gaps and just puts them in by default whether you want them or not.
