NEC DVD-RW will not read or write CDs.

    Hi.

I have an NEC ND-3540A DVD+RW drive, that recently stopped being able to read or write CDs There is no problem with DVDs. It is currently in a Linux system, but I can’t boot from CDs either which suggests that linux is not the problem.

If I put a CD in it and try to mount it then I get a ‘no media found’ error, and the same if I try to write a CDR.

The drive was flashed with the latest official firmware from NEC a couple of months ago in order to get 16x DVD-R writing to work, but it has read CDs successfully since then. I have never installed any of the unoffical firmwares out there onto it.

Has anyone seen similar problems? Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks.

Maybe off the mark but have you tried a simple lens cleaner CD?

Thanks, but the system it is in runs Linux, so I doubt that would be relevent. In any case, I can't access CDs from the BIOS either. (It won't boot from bootable CDs, but will from Bootable DVDs).
