    ATI's tripleplay physics

    Just a thought but has anyone got any ideas on whether ATI's new "GPU for physics" will work independently of the graphics subsystem? i.e. could I just put an X1600XT in and install the ATI physics software and have a PPU next to my nVidia graphics card? would be pretty potent marketing exercise - undercutting Ageia AND out performing them with a non-dedicated board that can be used as a graphics board too!

    I doubt that would happen, likely to work with mobo that have ATI chipset only

    Yeah as above it doesn't sound like its going to happen for nvidians... It's not something that is likely to be available for at least 6 months for anyone, as ATI will probably have to build there own reference board and then get sapphire to mass produce it etc etc.

    The ATI solution seems to be bit rushed when you consider that the RD600 reference board design can only take two double slot graphics cards with card three sandwiched between the two. The pictures hardocp have appear to show some sort 4x to 16x adapter being used. I do wonder how many boards at launch will support three double slot cards, actually thinking about it will any boards....

    Afterall if ATI/PCPartner didn't produce a reference design will one of the others invest the time and money need to develop a three double slot layout, and if so how come ATI have been using a intel chipset board to demonstrate a 3x x1900 configuration.

    Hmmm no room for a sound card in that configuration as well.

    well the current ageia board only works through the PCI bus

    that means 133mb/s shared with whatever else you have on there which is usually quite a lot on all but the latest boards

    so therell be no problem using 1x pci-e cards if thats all the bandwidth thats needed for physx... and conveniently HIS have just shown a prototype x1300 which should be perfect

    the whole "use your old GPU" thing wouldnt work but its still a cheap option which should bring things to a reasonable level
