Help me choose a new mobo and processor please!

Been racking my brains out looking for the right board! So I thought I'd ask you guys...

Basically, I'd like to speed up my pc... I mainly use it to download, photoshop, watch videos, listen to songs, MSN and general internet use! Also play some games once in a while (PES5! )

It's currently using Asus A78VX mobo.. Excuse me if i got the letters wrong! It's got an AMD Athlon XP chip, clock speed 1.3ghz.

Also got 1gb 184 pin ddr ram.. and on the way, I've got an AGP GeForce ti4600 so the new mobo needs to have an agp slot

I the new mobo to be compatible with my current ram, and my agp grfx card..Looking to spend around £100 for both mobo and processor... but maybe more. Any links to good ones? Preferably using UK shops like novatech.co.uk, ebuyer.co.uk, and ebay!

    Many thanks!

For £100 all in i would go with a S754 solution. A nice Athlon 64 or quick sempron would be a lovely upgrade from a 1.3ghz Athlon XP.

If your interested ill probably be selling probably the best S754 board (convienent eh?) in the next week or so. The DFi Lanparty NF3 250.

If it has to be all new id recommend:
    Motherboard: Abit NF8 NF3
Processor: AMD sempron 64 3000+ (retail so it comes with a Heatsink)

all in that comes to £110 inc delivery from scan.

I've just put together a pc for my sister with similar useage in mind - perhaps sempron 3100 s754 cpu would be a good start - i had a dfi mobo for my 754 chip - very pleased with it - it'll be in budget as well!
    E8500 - DFI P45 - 4Gb Corsair DHX - 4850 crossfire - X-Fi - water cooled and nice and quiet

Hmn.. Looks like those 1700+ to me (FYI, some steppings on those chips clock like weeee)... Well if u still want to upgrade and get everything into a 100 quid.. probably a Sempron 64 with some K8T800 board (Nforce3 150gb/250gb) offerings..

    Possibly a Parlemo core 3000+ with 256KB L2, thats about £55ish.. or go lower for a 2800+ 1.6Ghz with 256KB L2 for about £40ish if u shop around..

Run that with say an Abit KV8-Pro that goes for under £35 now.. Those aging PC2100 mem that works on 1700+ shud work here.. probably not very well.. but at least it'll work..

Your Ti4600 will probably serve u well...

Voila.. all done under £90 if u know where to shop...

    How about these from scan

    AMD Sempron 64 3100+ Socket754 at £66.01
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=250180

    and
    Gigabyte GA-K8NS nForce3 250 at £40.22
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=118029

    Total £106.23

Look through scans cpu and motherboard pages to vary parts and prices but stay with socket 754 if you want to keep at about £100.

Keep an eye on scans super savers eg today they have:

    AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Socket754 , Palermo Core, 1.8GHz , 128KB Cache, OEM

+ Abit KV-85 K8M800 motherboard with OnBoard VGA Lan SATA USB2 5.1Ch Audio

    + Akasa AK-861 heatsink

£91.94 including v.a.t. Though you may well do better going another route.

I managed to build a Socket 754 PC for around £150 using some parts from my old PC.

You will be able to use your RAM; harddrive (as backup - to keep your old files etc); floppy; cd drive etc.

Then you can get a nice sempron 754 64bit for £45 max
Cheap 754 Board (i bought mine second hand for £22)
    New 80Gb Harddrive (£35)
AGP Graphics Card - What ever you need (i used existing one as its not for games)
    PSU + Case £45
    Heatsink £10
Random Case Fane £5 (altho you can use your esisting one)

And i think that is about it (obviously you dont need all that, but that is about how much i spent on each bit).

You using existing RAM will help quite a bit, and as you can run a divider it wont impact your performance 'too' much.

    Ian

I recommend Scan (thats where i bought the majoirty of my components from) and LOW (CPU - lowest on web fyi) - I would advise against buying second hand harddrives or overclocked cpus etc.

It runs sweetly as far as i can tell Edit i would go for the sempron 2800+ due to the extra cache, as 128kb is very small. Mine was able to overclock to 3000+ settings (1.8ghz) very easily

sounds pretty reasonable - i reckon you'll see a massive difference over your current setup - nice one! ... and iirc the sempron 3100's clock quite nicely...

I never really love NF3 boards.. they are good, but sometimes runs a little too hot and are very picky on mems... VIAs offerings take most of the lot, esp slower ones..

I've tried some old Hynix PC2100 on my MSI Neo2 Plat board and it wont even post..

the early non 64bit ones clocked superbly, but i havent heard so much about the new ones. altho they should be pretty tasty with their 90nm fab process.

i have my sempron 64 2800 (1.6ghz) currently at 1880 and i know it will clock higher; just this board isn't especially well suited to the overclocking, the vcore settings are increase the core voltage by 3.3% 5% 10% :s

the 3100 is certainly good value if you can find it cheap enough. if not go for the 2800+ due to the extra cache (i know it may not do a hell of a lot but 128 is stingy - altho the architecture doesnt need it so much...) and overclock that!

    Many thanks again everyone....

    Have now decided on AMD Sempron 64 2800+ Socket754 , Palermo Core, 1.6GHz , 256KB Cache, Retail and the mobo; Gigabyte GA-K8NS nForce3 250 DDR400 Lan USB2 SATA

Any other little things I can buy to help keep temps downs and improve speed on the new setup? Was thinking of using the extra money to buy some round ide cables and ram heat spreaders.

Will there be anything else I will need to fit, like thermal grease or will that come with it?

Personally i wouldnt bother with ram spreaders or rounded ide cables unless its purely for show - then its aesthetics and up to you - as to the thermal grease thing, the cpu looks like retail so should come with hsf and pre apllied thermal grease - i wouldnt bother investing in AS5 etc as a few degrees C wont make any difference to you if you're not intending to overclock the cpu. I'd save the cash and buy something that'll be more usefull - how much ram are you running? Scan had 2x512 modules for £44 yesterday...

    I'm running 2 x 512mb

I thought something like round ide cables and heat spreaders would keep the temp down, as it would increase the airflow? The current wires in my case are a mess, I even have fans stuck on with bluetack! lol

I was actually thinking OC'ing it to about 1.8 eventually.

I think the argument about ram spreaders will stil go on but im under the impression that they do little to improve performance or stability under 'normal' operating conditions, but they do look nice - *shiny* . How about spend any leftover cash on a cable braiding kit and go on get some rounded ide cables then so that your pc will be nice and tidy - i guess that may make it a little better for air flow - unsure of how much real world benefit this will be though (other than the entertainment factor of sleeving all the cables from your psu!) - let us know!

yeh rounded IDE's and Ram spreaders are just not worth it really. The best thing you can buy to reduce is temps is a great big bag of cable ties. Then invest a few hours tieing all your cables into the corners of your case (away from airflow routes).
