    Laptop Hard drives

I think that the HDD is my laptop is broken or at least has had an error so that i cant load windows therefore i need to put it into my desktop.

The connector on the laptop HDD appears to not be normal IDE - do i need an adapter to IDE then? Also can anyone give me a link to some information about the laptop HDD connectors as i could not find anything on google about them lol

You could try an external enclosure, such as these from Scan

That way you can plug your laptop hard drive into anything with a free USB socket. Do check first though that you buy one with the right connectors for your laptop Hard drive. It might be worth giving them a call.

You can get a an adapter that allows you to connect a laptop (2.5") ide drive to a stadard connector from Micro-Anvika in London (I'm sure there are many other places - Google is your friend) - cost me about £14 aabout 3 years ago.

How come you can't just re-install windows on the laptop? Or do you need to recover data?

Something like this should do the job, if you want to connect to an IDE port on your desktop:

Also just in case you hadnæt spotted it, most laptop hard drives dont connect directly, they have a small adapter on the 2.5" 44 pin conector that allows the drive the be inserted and removed easily without risking the pins getting bent.

If the connector is flush with the end of the drive and doesn't have 44 distinct pins (like on a 3.5" drive, only smaller) when it has one of these adapters in there two. Just remove it carefully and you are all set.

Before you take the hard drive out of the laptop, you could try using something like WinPE/BartPE or a Linux Live CD and seeing if you can read any of the data. You could then transfer it to an external usb HDD or flash drive.

Don't mention Linux to him... (Get the adapter I mentioned in the earlier post!)
