If your playing BF2 you need a gig minimum (512 youll be chopping all over the place)

    Ideally 1.5gb / 2gb for bf2

I went from 1gb to 2gb and the difference in bf2 was brilliant

Pands' right, for BF2 1.5GB or 2GB is what you really need but considering it doesn't seem to be your main game, you could do a lot worse than 1GB Corsair VS.

Plus it's in keeping with your budget... something people around here don't really like doing...

I would personally go with the corsair stuff, life time warranty and peace of mind, never had any problems with them. if you thinking of going 2gb eventually get a stick of 1gb atm and save up, I think 2x1gb dual channel will be better than running 4x512mb

Basically what ady said, go for something like this and simply get another whenever you can afford it/need it

4x512 is basically the same as 2x1gb

you can lose some timings but using 4 dimms gives a little extra speed compared to 2 dimms at the same timings which makes up for near all the loss

BUT if youve got an older chip (anything except venice/san diego) then youre stuck with 2 dimms max for dual channel anyway or youll have to clock it down to DDR333

Will dual channel then run on different brands of memory with same CAS latency then and has to be in pairs for use, say, on the AsRock SATA dual (agp/pci) mobo?

atm ive got 4xTCCD sticks but when i built this comp i was using 2 x Winbond CH5 with 2 x TCCDs (Samsung)

that was fine in dual channel mode (1 of each type per channel)

that asrock board always works at 2T even with 2 dimms so theres no problem using 4 in it, it will actually be faster slightly

I can back up chem's statement there, using 4 sticks of 512mb on my Asrock Dual with no problems at all. Highest graphics on BF2/CSS and WoW with absolutely no lag.
