AMD Athlon 64 3800+ question?

Hi

Anyone know if the above single core skt 939 chip needs DDR2 RAM to achieve its 3800+ rating at 2.4Ghz? I have seen that a skt 754 3400+ (2.4Ghz) runs on DDR RAM and so would be the same performance perhaps?

You can't run a S939 3800 with DDR2. It's a different type of memory and the memory controller on S939 A64s is incompatible with it. DDR2 is used by the new socket AM2 A64s. The prime difference between the S939s and S754s with regard to the memory controller is that the S939s memory controller is capable of running memory in dual channel mode, which can provide somewhat better performance.

edit: In addition, the S754 part only supports 1600MHz effective Hypertransport as opposed to 2000MHz effective.

Thanks for the replies. So I could use my Crucial and Samsung DDR RAM (6464z40B) modules in an AsRock dual sata2 (PCI/AGP) mobo ok?

EDIT: I have one crucial 512MB and one Samsung 512MB so don't think they would work in dual-channel mode or am I wrong (read it somewhere)?

No reason why you shouldn't be able to, I'd have thought. Crucial's decent stuff.

They should work fine in dual channel if they are the same speed memory, but if the underlying chips are quite different then maybe not.
