Am I correct in saying that DDR2 533 (say, geil's DDR 2gb pack) is actually the required ram for the conroe?

You can basically use any ram. There is a ram divider which can bring the speed down to 400/533/666/800/1066/1333. Just pick the most suitable ratio.
Like my DDR2-533 it can handle DDR2-762 (My overclocked FSB from 200 up to 286) without any trouble.
Giving it faster ram should help with performance, but the difference is small, so you don't really need to buy ultra-expensive ram.
