PSU +12v line amps and X1900XT

Howdy.. I'm thinking about upgrading to an X1900XT from a 6800Ultra. Now, I've been hearing/reading that you need 30amps on your +12v line from the PSU to be able to run the X1900XT stable. My current PSU: Hiper Type R 580w has, according to the manual, two +12v's.. one labelled +12v1 and +12v2. +12v1 has a max of 20amps on it and the +12v2 has 18amps. Does that mean I have a maximum of 38amps on my +12v, or do I only have 20amps max.

Anyone care to help me out with this query?

Cheers

You have split rails
Some PSUs like Tagan can combine and split them depending on what you want, i dont think your PSU can, but have a check as im not 100% sure.
It is a known "issue" with some PSU's, as the 30amps is needed off a single line. If your PSU cant do this, you may well run into problems.

depends what you also have on each rail & therefore the current draw.
Imo you should be OK but there's only 1 way to find out for sure ...

Pie_uk: Which Seasonic PSU model do you have? I checked the Seasonic website and it seems most Seasonic PSU's use +12v1 and +12v2 like mine does, so maybe there's hope for me and my PSU

Agent: I've emailed Hiper about this, no reply just yet.

I've been wondering this also, please post back if you get a good answer Flakvin... I intend to pair up an X1900XT-X with the same PSU, my PC won't have loads of hard drives, fans or random accessories so I think this would be ok. Would be great if someone could clarify though.

hardly any modern psu's have a single 12v rail of 30amps - the ATX2 specs (I think thats the one) asks for 2 12v rails neither exceeded 20amps. I think the 30amps is a combined ampage for both 12v rails.

Right well, I've taken the jump and ordered an X1900XT, so I'll either be very happy very soon or very pissed very soon (and out of pocket £251). Info posted here and collected elsewhere shows I ''should'' be ok with this card and my Hiper PSU.

I'll post what happens when the beast arrives.

I've got my x1900xt clocked at 730/850 with max core/mem voltages on my hiper 480w so the 580w should be more than fine.

Yeah, my X1900XT runs fine overclocked to whatever it is this week and I'm using a 400W Zalman PSU, so I certainly wouldn't worry about it. I think a lot of the hype about power requirements appears to be over the top - either that or vendors are just hedging their bets and claiming huge demands so customers can't complain if they have problems running the things due to a cheapass power supply.

Extra little note, Hiper emailed me to let me know that the PSU has a maximum of 38Amps on the 12v+ rail... so, that's cool
