Watercooling suggestion ?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a watercooling system, but my main reason for doing it would be to get the quietest PC possible.

Is that possible with a watercooling kit or do the fans on the radiator make more noise than a set of 3-4 quiet PC fans?

I'm currently running a 1700+JIUHB DLT3C Tbird at 2Gig (1.65V)and it stays below 45 degrees. I've a globalwin cak4-88t so the cpu fan is quiet, but the noise is more of an accumulation of little quiet fans. I have one of those Chieftec scorpio cases (http://www.chieftec.com/products/Workcolor/Scorpio.htm) and so there's a fair amount of room.

The only snag is I have 3 harddiscs, two of which are maxtor diamondmax9's connected to the S-ATA via serillel adaptors. and a third IBM. There is an intake fan at the bottom in front of the cage of the two S-ATA'd drives, a second intake one on the side to keep my GFX card cool (which has a zalman fanless cooler on it) and a third exhaust fan at the back.

My pc isn't particularly noisy, but to keep it as cool as possible, I'd thinking about watercooling.

Considering my setup, is it worthwhile and will it keep both the temps, and noise levels down, or will it be just as noisy as a standard pc with a set of low-rpm fans ?

I've already invested a fair amount in fans, and cpu cooler and gfx cooler, so I only want to make the jump if it's really worth it.

Any ideas or experience to offer ?

BTW, I do believe cpucity.co.uk rock. a 2 gig chip on 200 mhz dual-ddr platform for less than 50 squid ?

Hehe, regarding the Maxtor drives, I would never buy them again... Well, when I say that, I mean I'd never buy a D740X drive again (the now superceded DiamondMax 8).

I've had SIX of them fail on me. All of them had to be RMA'd The last drive I've recieved from Maxtor is a DiamondMax 9, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Yes they are quiet and are pretty fast (at least in Raid0 on the s-ata)

However, I've got to a point where I'd rather have a slower and more reliable drive than one which writes sooooooo fast it scratches sectors on the way

Oh, and it sounds as if your dodgy £15 cooler does just as good job as the globalwin (purchased from OCS, RIP )

to keep your watercooling cool AND quiet, you want a large radiator (a H120.2 or H120.3), a quiet low-power pump (such as an Eheim 1046), and a number of quiet 120mm fans modded to 7V (try some Papsts from www.wizarddesigns.co.uk).consider also some matting such as akasa paxmate

There was a decent review of the Asetek Waterchill kit

It kept a 3.06Ghz p4 @ 36.5oC
The same chip at 3.5Ghx @42oC

Looks pretty good to me for an all in one kit, although you will get better results from a proper setup or different quality components.

I was thinking about the waterchill.

I don't need super cooling performance, and I'm guessing that a fairly low end spec watercooling kit will still outperform a noisy delta fan.

But I seem to remember a review saying it wasn't particularly quiet, and can't fall into "quiet PC" category, which is what I'm after.

I'll have another look. All these reviews are often so subjective and one raves it and another slates it. Go figure...

Well the guys doing the review were from Chillblast.com I will scan it in if you like, the only thing that will be noisy is the 120mm fan or the pump tbh, You can always enclose the pump or pad it out to quiet it down (the pump is most likely to be the noisy thing)

Yes they are, however you are moving into much more expensive/larger setups then

dont get waterchill tbh. -overrated -expensive

go with a maze 4 (failing that, maze 3)
thermochill or black ice or car heatercore (cheaper + better performing)
1048 (or 1250 if you plan to cool your nb + gfx) the 1250 has a slight humming noise, but notthing loud -kinda like a fan at 5v, audible but very quiet , if you're going for TOTAL SILENCE, get a large rad, and run it externally -with no fans (using the 1048)

swiftech kits are very respectable aswell.

cheapest place for eheim pumps (well used to be for ages, if i'm wrong, please tell me) is www.aquatics-online.co.uk [i]search for 1250 and it'll find the page with all the pumps on.

get clearflex 1/2" 3mm tubing. from www.pclincs.co.uk, its not the cheapest stuff availiable, but its REALLY flexible -same as tygon apparantly?.

also, the cheiftec cases are excellent for watercooling, plenty of room for internal setups, a rad with a fan at 5v WILL cool sufficiently in a decent kit.

mine gives summer load temps of about 42-44

Just a general question acidrainy, have u tried running Prime95 at 2.3ghz? I was getting errors at that speed, so I'm at 2.23 atm.

yeah i ran it for 2 hours fine when i was on irc, then did it for 24 hours the week after....

not 1 error


Whats your exact setup icl psu? could be a poor component somewhere...

Well, my 2.3ghz settings were slightly different to ures. I had the FSB at 210 and the multi at 11. Might increase the multi by .5 and lower the FSB.

I have a JIUHB DLT3C 0323RPMW XP1700, the infamous Abit NF7-S v2.0, 256MB Twinmos 3200 memory (which should be 512mb soon, Komplett have finally mailed my RMA ) and a 550w Q-tec PSU.
