    7900GT vs 7800GTX?

I'm after a new gfx card in the next month or so and I'm wondering which to get. The 7800GTX and 7900GT perform pretty much the same, no? If the price was the same what should I go for? I'm leaning toward the 7800 because of the bigger, better and quieter cooler. Any advice would be well appreciated.

    Thanks once again, Hexites!

Oh right, thanks for the info. I've put a low bid on a 7900gt on ebay so I'll see how it goes with that, if not I might look into a 7800gtx with badass cooler like yours clunk

From my understanding it was only the 7800GTX 512 that had the big heatpipe cooler? or am I thinking of something else.

If you want performace + cooling + quiet, get the 7900GT and stick a zalman VF900 on it, quiet as hell and spanked my OC'ed 6800GT where heat was concerned, it used to run 56 idle, 68/70 burn, now with the Zalman it runs 46/48 idle, 50/52 on burn!

Gotta buy another one when I upgrade to 7900GT this week

7900GT is pratically the same as a 7800GTX, but a little faster.

The real difference is that it has newer technology (smaller NM core) also, it runs much much cooler and is a smaller card. This means you can have a quiet fast card compared to the GTX which is long and runs hotter.

    Thanks.

No the 7800GTX 512mb had exactly the same stock cooler as the 7900GTX does now. Very very nice efficient cooler and a decent card

Thats right. The stock cooling for the GTX 512mb was always the heatpipe cooler. The GTX 256 had a smuch smaller cooler (still pretty decent though)

you must be thinking about something else as well. there have been a few 256 versions with that cooler on.

Some 256's did come with that super cooler but the vast majority did not. It was NOT the reference cooler like it is now for the 7900gtx and was for the 512mb 7900gtx.

The one you pointed out clunk was one of the extreme versions, which IIRC did mostly come with them big coolers but normally the standard 256's did not.

But thats beside the point, a 7900gt is a better buy than a 7800gtx in 99% of cases.
