    Synology 101g+ or 101j? 1000mbps vs 100mbps ethernet

Is it worth spending extra cash on the 101g+ to get 1000mbps ethernet?

The spec of both models states "Max. 480Mbps (HS Mode) or 12Mbps (FS Mode) for data transmission" the 101j has 10/100mbps but the 101g also has 1000mbps ethernet.

Is the 1000mbps going to make any difference? data will be coming from the internal SATA and via USB2 attached drives so would 100mbs ethernet be a bottleneck?

I'd prefer the cheaper IDE 101j but speed is a definite consideration.

    Thanks in advance

the biggest bottleneck inthat would be the ethernet but you have th make sure all of your p.c connectiiung to it and the switch it is connected to are gigE as well otherwise there is no point.also there maybe a bottleneck from the eide hard drive but im not to sure about that

I would think the 100mbps would be a bottleneck, and 1000mbps is 10x faster than the 100, but even then, it is almost 5x faster with the 480mbps bottleneck, although of course this speed is seldom reached, I am sure that it would be faster than 100mbps, so the 1000mbps seems like a good idea, but I suppose it depends on the price difference.

Since the onboard processor is not that fast to handle high throughput, I estimate the maximum speed will be around 25MB/s for the 1000Mbps one and 12MB/s for the 100Mbps.

If you're just streaming single-user, even 100Mbps can handle MPEG2 TS HDTV stream without trouble.

Though, in times its a pain in the arse to move hundreds of GBs through 100Mbps network.

Thanks a million, it's great to be able to ask a question like that and get sensible responses.

The price diff is about £50 (an extra 40%) so it's not insignificant. It would mainly be used for music streaming so I wouldn't normally need the high bandwidth but as you say, if I have to move data around much it could be a real bonus.
