Faulty Ram??

I ran memtest86 today on my ram after suspecting my motherboard then my CPU of being faulty..

The problem was that my motherboard wouldnt recognise my CPU as an XP2000+ (full problem is listed in the "here we go again" thread) it would only recognise it as a 1666Mhz duron or a 1250 mhz duron.. well today it said it was a 1400mhz..

Would faulty ram affect the system so much as to make the motherboard unable to recognise the CPU?

well did memtest86 test pass after running it for a while (maybe over an hour?), i'm pretty confused as to why your computer isnt working with the athlon, yet it does with the 100mhz fsb duron... how far have you got with RMAing it?

Would almost certainly be down to the mobo BIOS, do you have the latest one? May be try reflashing/redownloading. Be sure to set defaults and the retweak after flashing too, some people find that best. I thin you may have to try each of your parts in a known working PC to find the culprit. What's your system spec, does your mobo support the FSB and/or CPU type (eg Pally, TbredA, TbredB, Thorton) and finally are you sure your CPU is a true XP2000+.

Umm, when I first built and booted my PC for the first time, my XP2500+ was refered to as a Athlon 1100mhz (11x100).

As it was the first time I built a system from scratch I was a bit worried, but after switching my PC off and restarted it (a few times), the bios eventually recognised it..

That also happened when I did something silly.. Tried to boot at 2.4ghz on stock voltage

It will do this so if you overclock too much, it'll fall back to failsafe so it can boot

Never overclocked, and its a true XP2000+ (AXDA2000DUT3C)

Specs are

XP2000+
Soltek SL-75FRN-L
512MB PC2700
Gf4 mx 440
etc..

I can test the ram at my brothers I guess.. and can send the CPU to be tested on monday

I got a phonecall from Soltek Holland who gave me a number (RMA number? - alphanumeric) and an address to send the board too. I will leave sending the board till last

memtest said "pass - 1" "Error - 0" after an hour after 2 hours it was pass 1, error 1130

iirc each error was at "137.3MB"

Well it would point to an error/fault in your RAM, the RAM slot(s) or controller on your mobo. Have you tried the RAM in different slots? Do instruct your BIOS to run the RAM synced with FSB (2x133=266mhz) as that's the fastest setting to use on nForce2. It's usually best to set the RAM timings to AUTO/SPD, certainly while troubleshooting. Why on Earth your mobo wouldn't detect your stock CPU properly I simply can't imagine. Best of luck.

I think im best RMA'ing it then, ill send it off on Monday hopefully
