    P4 @ 80 degrees after 10 mins of gaming

    See title.

It's not overclocked or anything, just a stock 2.8Ghz... and I'm pretty sure 80 degrees is too damn hot. It idles at around 65 degrees, and even straight after booting it's already at 60. Isn't 40 more like a decent idling temp?

Suppose you'll need some info before you can help. Erm, it's in a machine that used to have a 3.0Ghz Celeron...there's plenty of thermal paste on there though it has gone grey and lumpy like it always does. What else..? Oh and the fan goes into full whack pretty quickly so it's aware of the high temp etc.

If you can offer any advice I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks

When you say 'plenty' of thermal paste, do you mean a thick layer? Thermal paste tends to work better with a thin layer so reapplying it would help some.

Also what heatsink are you using, and what is your case cooling like?

Hmm yes, I think it would qualify as a thick layer. Thanks for that, will correct the issue.

Erm, I'm using the stock heatsink. As for case cooling I don't think I have any, depending on what the term means. The only cooling I have is what came with the PSU, CPU and GPU.

You need some case fans to shift the hot air from the CPU, GPU etc heatsink out from the case.

Hmm OK, but I bought this machine from a store, shouldn't it have come with case cooling then?

    And thanks for that link.

I've just been on my BIOS to see what that thought of the situation, and I noticed the setting that sets a temperature that the CPU fan aims for, and the lowest is 60 degrees. Isn't that a bit odd? Is there a known way around it?

it's not odd if there's excessive cheap thermal paste plastered on the CPU.. a nice thinnnn layer of Artic Silver 5 would make a huge difference.. a decent heatsink wouldn't go amiss either. Right now I have my P4E 3.2Ghz running full load (protien folding), it's only 47.5C. It was the last revision of the S478 prescotts.
