If a motherboard accepts AMD 64's weather it's a single core or dual core, right up to the FX60, does that mean it'll accept the opteron cpu's.

As long as they are the s939 Opterons then yes. The s940 opterons are different, and yet again are the s940 am2 chips.

and it does depend on how old your motherboard is - most new ish bios's will be ok.
