DUALCORE Question

I have recently put an amd 64 4800 dualcore into my sn25p shuttle barebone system.

was wondering if anyone has done the same, and have they had problems with the fan. the standard fan on the shutlle runs constantly with the dualcore (which makes me think the fan/heatsink with the shuttle is under powered).

second thing .. is windows xp desen't seem to recognise the dualcore, does anyone know of a windows fix for this.

any help of advise would be great .. thanks in advance

To be fair, that's a hot hot chip to place in such a small box, it's to be expected that the HSF will have to do some work to remove the heat.

You may want to experiment with replacing the fan with something more efficient (i.e. same cooling for less noise), and make sure Cool 'n' Quiet is activated to reduce the heat output when it's idling.

Cool 'n' Quite, is that a setting for xpc's (excuse my lack of knowlegde in these things)
and in fairness i should have pointed out that while its idling its not to bad, put do anything other than idle and the fan goes full on

We had the same problem with a number of systems at work recently. They all had the bios updated and it fixed the problem. So check what version bios you have and see whether its X2 compatable. I know that my SN25P will need a bios update before i run an X2 in it.

i was really hoping that that would not be the problem .. me and bios dont mix well.

You dont need to do anything in the bios i dont think. There is a hotfix for it.

yea .. thats what i though Memphis, but it didnt work, eventually gave in a flashed the bios, worked fine and xp now sees the dualcore ... problem solved

Hmm, well it worked for me but if everythings ok now then thats good.
Do you get any problems in game with you dual core? I get insane amounts of lag in games like cs:s, stopped playing it now becasue i just cant.

Would a lower end X2 cpu like the 3800 be ok in a Shuttle then?

Ok guys, somebody is seriously misleading the masses here!

I have a Shuttle SN25P, I have an X2 4800+ (and it's running with a .15GHz overclock to 2.55GHz). And the best thing: it idles below 20C - even with fans blasting at 100% hits 16C easy! At load, yes it goes up, low 30s is about what I expect from it. Oh and I do have screenshots to prove that if u need them!!!

Anyways, in answer to the main question, the second isn't showing up for certain due to a bios update being needed. This is a standard thing with older motherboards unless supplied with updated bioses. However, the SN25P is a very dangerous machine to try updating the bios on; and has a very high bios destruction rate. A replacement can be bought for about £5 and pre-flashed, but even still it might be a pain.

I haven't come across that fan problem though? Is it actually booting to windows, or whats happening? A known problem if your bios is dead is that the fans would spin, but then it wouldn't post at all...

Any S939 CPU will work in a Sn25P (as long as you have the current bios)

So, you are gently blowing air at ~25C (or even hotter, as it has to go through your warm case before it gets to the ICE, so lets say 30C) over the heatsink, which is attached to your CPU with a lossy thermal connection, yet it still can get your CPU to 20C.

My word, you've discovered an over unity device - patent it now!

Or, perhaps your temperature sensors are incorrect.

Lol, that's when it's colder - No I can't really explain it, but room temperature would be a reasonable target.

I don't think they're off because when I ran benchmarkers on it the numbers that came out were a lot higher than expected. OH and yes the time it was at 16C was a very cold day

The air that goes into the Shuttle goes straight in, over the CPU and then out again, not interfering with any other components as it goes through a funnel.

OMG, idle at 16*C???? thats insane for dual core. You reading from the bios?
Mine idles at about 33*C lowest.
