Logitech G7 - Freezes/lockups

Had a Logitech G7 now for a few months from Scan and it's developed a fault. Every so often it just locks up completely for about 4-5 seconds, then back to normal. Sometimes it can do it persistantly for a few minutes then go away for hours.

I've done some reading around and others are having/have had the same issue and it's been suggested that there's a fault with the battery connectors. Some people have claimed that changing frequency on their wireless router has solved it but others such as myself have confirmed they have no wireless gear that affects it. A quick scan with my PSP shows that there is only one wireless point near my house and I know that's been there since I got the mouse.

So, the upshot of the thread really was to see if anyone else has experienced it and if so what they did to resolve it.

I'm probably looking at an RMA to Logitech though, very dissapointing for a very expensive piece of kit.

I've had the same thing with my MX900, so it might be a driver issue rather than a hardware fault - it never happened if I used the original drivers (2.22), but for this install I used the latest SetPoint ones instead (2.60 I think it was at the time).

Looking underneath, the power is always there, so I don't think the battery connectors are the issue in my case.

Not sure if it is a software issue (with the G7) since it does it with XP with setpoint 2.60 and also in Vista with just the bare MS drivers.

On reading up on the G7 there are a good number of MX1000 owners complaining of similair sypmtoms though.

All USB mice use the standard HID protocol, meaning one HID driver should work with any HID device, Microsofts HID driver is very stable, if you have a USB mouse problem, it's definatly going to be hardware related.

Well I've just got off the phone from Logitech support and was dealt with by a woman with a broad Jamaican accent that made it quite tricky to communicate but anyway. She was obviously script reading and, even though I explained what I'd already done to try and resolve the issue, tried telling me to do comedy things like set the resolution within Setpoint.

Anyhoo, after finally agreeing that the unit was faulty (she simply wouldn't accept that there are a good number of documented cases of people with exactly the same fault, meaning it's a design flaw) she gave me a ref number and told me to speak to Scan about getting it replaced. Hopefully that won't be an issue as Scan have excellent customer service.

Don't you love it when you ring these places having tried all possible solutions, tell them you have tried all possible solutions and they still have you run through them again.

I ordered a G7 at the start of the week to replace my MX1000, hope I don't have to go through this with mine in a few months time.

Tell me about it, still I tend not to get flustered since I know they're only doing what they're trained to do/have to do.

Least I've got my old MX518 in the cupboard to use in the meantime, although the teflon feet are buggered but that's another story :rolleyes:

Just wondering if you use a mouse mat of some description with your G7 or just use it on your normal work surface?

I have been looking for a suitable mouse mat for use with G7.

Mouse mats are pretty pointless for infra-red mice.

Depends on the surface - some desk surfaces can be too smooth for good IR tracking, and then again if they're too rough the mouse either doesn't glide well or the feet wear out quickly.

I don't think my desk surface is too bad, I have the MX1000 at the moment and that's been ok. I don't recall having any issues with the MX1000, not used it in a while as my main system is in bits and my new system is still in boxes waiting to be built so using my laptop.

Wasn't sure if there was a decent mouse mat that may prolong the life of the mouse feet and work well the the G7 lazer.

I don't know about the lazer specifically, sorry, but I do know that you can get teflon tape for replacing worn out mouse feet very cheaply, so don't worry about that overly much.
