    Opteron vs Athlon 64

What is the difference between running an Opteron and an Athlon 64 at stock speeds if they have the same clock speed, multiplier and cache?

I have left this as a simple question, as its part of a running debate between me and a mate.

Overclocking potential is not an issue.

Performance wise from what I understand there is NO difference - they use the same core essentially. It's just Opteron's are better 'hand picked' so to speak due to them normally being used in server situations and as such offer greater probability of overclocking. I may be wrong though...

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0Ghz 512Kb cache £82.19
    AMD Opteron UP 146 2.0GHz 1MB Cache £129.19

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.4Ghz 1MB Cache £438.92
    AMD Opteron UP 180 2.4GHz 2MB Cache £439.44

generally opterons contain 2x the cache of the A64 equivalents. the prices here are in no way a reflection of the best that can be had. but just a rough idea. if the opteron of the same speed+cores is close to the prce of the A64/X2 you are looking at then i would certainly go for it.

    I know that.......

What I am asking is for example, comparing

An Opteron 148 with 2.2Ghz clock speed and 1MB cache

    compared to a

Athlon 64 3700 with 2.2Ghz clock speed and 1MB cache

are there any other differences running these both unclocked?

iv found in the past that the higher a processor overclocks, the lower the voltage can be dropped at stock speeds. this is purely from experience and i dont have much in the way of *proof* to back it up sorry. and as opterons clock higher *usually* thats a slight advantage.

i wouldnt pay any more for the opteron if thats all your going to do tho

there are old socket 940 opterons, the 142 and 144 only i think

they were 1.6 and 1.8ghz and they lacked sse3 which might be where the rumours came from that opterons werent as good for certain things

the clawhammer, Newcastle, and Winchester A64's didnt have sse3 either tho. although i couldnt say if the A64's and Opterons change to sse3 enabled cores at the same time or not

    The 4800+ has 1mb of cache per core= 2Mb.
