Question XP Pro won't recognise Hard drive.

Just got myself a new Shuttle and have installed XP on a Seagate Barracuda. I decided i'd use the 3.5" slot as an extra hard drive so I've put a 10GB hard drive that i had from an old gateway system in and connected everything up. Now when i enter windows it doesn't show the drive anywhere on My Computer but it does show up in the BIOS. I have the disk on the same IDE as my CDROM but in a slave configuration. The CDROM is set to master.

Am i missing something simple? I imagined that connecting the disk would be enough and XP would recognise and do the rest. This problem has croppped up before but never found a solution.

    TIA

It could be a few things. Firstly not formatted as Trig said, it may also not be partitioned, or just formatted for some other OS.

You can format, initialise and/or partition from the Windows Disk Management in XP and 2k so you should be able to do everything easily from there.

great. i'll give that a go. I had used the drive briefly for Linux a while back so it could be that.

one more question. When I installed XP pro (yesterday) it seemed to only give the option of NTFS. Is this a problem, is FAT32 not the standard? Will this pose a problem when networking or sharing files?

If it ONLY gives u the NTFS option then the partition is most likely too big to be formatted as FAT32...

sounds like the disk needs fdisking and formatting. so that windows can locate it, especially when its had a linux instalation on it which is a dif file format

The disk that only gave me the NTFS is the 60GB Seagate. Surely this isn't too big for FAT32. It doesn't really matter to me what the file format is as long as it works.

Microsoft decided to stop supporting FAT32 on drives over something like 32GB. FAT32 WOULD work, but MS want you to switch, as NTFS would be faster and more secure (but not compatible with 9x and writing with Linux).
