Some of the earlier boards require a BIOS update. Others simply do not support it (although a minority). The very first boards based on the VIA KT890 chipset did not. VIA updated the chipset, so that later boards could though.
Afaik all nforce4 boards do at lest with a bios update in some places.

Yes - all nForce4 S939 boards will support X2, VIA is a different story-
