    6600 GT > quake 3

The only game i'll ever play on my pc when i do decide to play games is quake 3 , so is my 6600 GT more than good enough for this? i remember in my old pc i had some old crappy 5200 FX thing, and still did very well in quake,

or isnt gameing all down to graphics, does it also take a fast CPU to be fast in the game?

I have a normal 6600 and it run quake 4 pretty well so quake 3 should be fine.

I found uping my ram from 512mb to 1GB made a fair differance to game play.

A 6600GT should be have no problems to play Quake 3. However, if you have an old/slow CPU and not much RAM, thats going to be your bottle neck. More RAM is always good, and its very cheap at the moment.

If it's Q3 you wanna play then even my sub £500, 3 year old, utter POS laptop with horrific intergrated graphics can play it at 1024x768 with everything on maximum! So you should have no probs. If you wanna play Quake 4 then it's still good enough.

Quake 3 is really very long in the tooth now, which means it was designed with systems that were considered powerful in the late 90's in mind. As a result Quake 3 ran well on my nVidia Riva TNT based Diamond Viper 550 with it's Celeron 266 overclocked to 448MHz (1999) and even better on my GeForce 256 DDR with it's Pentium 3 500 overclocked to 667MHz (2000) , so really any modern graphics card with 3D acceleration will run it well, even value products such as the GeForce 7300 and Radeon X1300 are more than able to handle Quake 3, even in higher resolutions.

Anyhow, any PC you buy today will be able to handle upto even UT2004, within reason, i.e. 128mb of ram wont cut the mustard

A 6600GT is overkill for Quake 3. It runs at 90FPS on an MX440 at 1024x768.

A 660GT runs most things pretty well, get a brand that is factory overclocked to 500 core and 1 Ghz ram (I have the XFX AGP board). I have only just recently had to start knocking some games down to 800x600 resolution, this is mainly due to my processor (Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core) bottlenecking the card however. I also have 1 Gb ram which is DDR 333 (PC2700) which is also contributing to the bottleneck but not as much as the processor.

With my setup I can run the Doom 3 engine in 800 x 600 with 2x AA and high detail, so running quake 3 should be blinding fast.

pls don't be offended....but this sounds to me more like you are having gaming trouble? You dying a lot or what? Ya need help in Q3 game play? Are you getting mullered?

What frame rate are you getting?

Pull down the console in Q3 (hit the ` key....it's to the left of the 1 on the top row)

    Then type:

    timedemo 1 (enter)

then close the console (` again) and choose one of the demos, 001 or 002 and it will play as fast as your system will allow with the current settings. When the demo has finished open the console and the last line will give number of frames, and the frame rate

    What's it at?
