what new CPU for a cheap baseunit

hi, going to be building myself a new baseunit in the next few weeks(after the 21st when i get paid)

i don't play games so any old £30 graphics card will do, i'm only going to be spending £300-£400 i download a lot of TV shows so i need something that is good for extracting files(use winrar and quick par loads) other than that internet/msn a little photoshop maybe.

so i've always gone with AMD before, but would a intel cpu be better for my use?

been looking at a AMD 3700+ 64bit cpu so would any intel of around that price range be better?

for the money i need-

Case-PSU(would like a quiet one so don't mind spending the bit extra to get something nice on a case)
Mobo
CPu
graphics card(anything with VGA/DVI)
RAM-2gig if i can't get 2gig in budget i'll add an extra gig next pay day)
DVDRW
HDD(looking for a small SATA HDD to just install windows and programs on as i've got a IDE HDD thats got all my files on)

Not sure of your current system specs, so maybe suggesting a downgrade here! However, what with the impending Conroe release, the next few weeks are going to be a good time to buy into slightly older technology if you don't mind haveing a limited upgrade path - or not if you go the AM2 route with AMD.

Anyway, hows about:

OR:

Any AM2 CPU - they start for as little as £32 for a Sempron 2800 and go all the way through to £700 for a FX 62 dual core, so has a great upgrade path as and when you see fit.

An Intel 805 (£80) with a good HSF (say £20-30) will give you a dual-core for around the same price as an AMD single-core, and it can be overclocked with ease. If you to be able to leave your download app working in the background while you do other stuff, you'll find a dual-core useful.

hi, thanks. well i sold my old PC a couple of weeks ago atm i'm on a old 650mhz laptop with 256mb ram and a massive 12gb HDD

was going to get a new laptop but decided i won't use it anywhere other than at the desk so no point.

so looking at a nice little desktop £400max is all i ever pay for a desktop as i don't play games.

just looking for something that will last me a couple of years don't really care about upgrades tbh as i normal just start over after 2years.

just need to know if a P4 would be better than a 64bit AMD(would be a 3500+/3700+)

also wouldn't a 64bit single core be better than a 32bit dual core(p4's are 32bit right)for windows vista when thats out

Forget about AMD and get the new Intel conroe in launch 24/07, it is fast than a FX-60 and if you want to extract things like winrar or br it is far the best choice the 6300 conroe will be around 140£ and the mobo 40£ there is no better deal in the web in 2 weeks time.

HDD you can get a seagate 320 GB for just 66£, it is cheaper and works flawless.

cool i'll take a look then they do look very nice 80gig HDD is fine as i've got a IDE HDD with my files one(only 120gb but i delete the shows after watching them) so no need for a big HDD.

Not acording to Asus, if the power circutry is compatable, they might release a BIOS update.. but I wouldn't hold my breath, the Asrock board mentioned above is conroe compatable though.

got it to £498 now.

thats looking like the best option now.

the core 2 duo 6300, 2gig ram, mobo, case+psu(thats over £100 there) HDD. just need to get a cheap graphics card then.
